The goal? Changing agriculture to tackle climate change.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In order to tackle climate change U.S. agriculture &#8220;needs a collections of <strong>practices<\/strong> tailored for each region, <strong>climate<\/strong>, soil type, and farming system&#8221; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soils.org\/science-policy\/issues\/climate-change\/?utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=b670a8e0-e11a-488b-88e2-ba12262c5f62\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three different organizations<\/a>: the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society and the <strong>Soil Science Society of America<\/strong>. In the U.S., the entire food production chain is worth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/data-products\/chart-gallery\/gallery\/chart-detail\/?chartId=58270\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$1.1 trillion<\/a>, or more than 5% of GDP. The agricultural sector accounts for <strong>136 billion<\/strong>. Global warming and <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-protection-nasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unsustainable resource management<\/a>, however, create well-known problems.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why the three associations created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soils.org\/files\/science-policy\/issues\/2021-acs-climate-solutions-statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new policy document<\/a> in recent weeks to provide new solutions whith Seven different <strong>recommendations<\/strong>. Solutions must involve all players in the chain: including policymakers, operators, researchers and distributors.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This week, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ASA_CSSA_SSSA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ASA_CSSA_SSSA<\/a> released a climate solutions position statement which outlines concrete actions policymakers can take right now to help U.S. agriculture mitigate <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/climatechange?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#climatechange<\/a> and adapt to its effects. Read the full statement here: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7hAxsatGae\">https:\/\/t.co\/7hAxsatGae<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LL00LgANI9\">pic.twitter.com\/LL00LgANI9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Soil Science Society of America (@SSSA_soils) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SSSA_soils\/status\/1425110196716810244?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>1) Agriculture must balance its emissions.<\/h5>\n<p>Today\u2019s agriculture needs to <strong>balance emissions with sequestration<\/strong>, water use with water retention, and soil building, not soil erosion, all without increasing acreage in production,&#8221; the document states. Moreover: &#8220;it needs to efficiently pay back what it withdraws from the planet and stem the emissions that cause climate change&#8221;. In short: &#8220;The first step toward achieving <strong>ecosystem balance<\/strong> is to decrease agriculture\u2019s overall footprint&#8221;. This requires the creation of a set of specific interventions suited to each kind of situation. Therefore, there is no general solution, but rather a set of different practices.<\/p>\n<h5>2) Data are crucial<\/h5>\n<p>Climate-friendly agriculture can preserve soil <strong>ecosystem services<\/strong>. The benefits are well-known, but measuring them is not easy. &#8220;The \u201cwicked problem\u201d of ecosystem services is that each practice and each benefit does not operate in isolation. Their ultimate potential and impact lies in how they synergize, counteract, or are modified in concert,&#8221; the authors explain. &#8220;Elucidating this complex dance is a research frontier that scientists have only begun to understand, but it is essential for the success and credibility of<strong> climate-smart agriculture<\/strong> programs.&#8221; In short, we need to invest in technology and coordination of information by harmonizing data production. The U.S. Department of Agriculture should encourage practices that support the sustainability of the agricultural system, starting with those that enhance <strong>carbon sequestration<\/strong> capacity. However, &#8220;because their <strong>effectiveness<\/strong> will vary across regions and farming systems, new strategies, tools, and technologies must also be developed for a nation-wide implementation to be successful.&#8221; In short: thinking on a national scale but taking into account local specificities.<\/p>\n<h5>4) A resilient soil towards extreme weather events<\/h5>\n<p>In recent years, extreme weather events have become more frequent, favoring the outbreak of <strong>natural disasters<\/strong>. In 2019, experts say, 40 percent of fields in South Dakota, for example, could not be planted due to <strong>flooding<\/strong>. More recently, California <strong>wildfire<\/strong> spread has been notoriously devastating. &#8220;Agronomic researchers regularly look at resilience through the lens of soil health and cropping systems,&#8221; the report states. &#8220;For example, they ask the following: Is the soil in a position to absorb water in case of flood or retain it in case of drought? Will it resist erosion?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, there are effective carbon-capture practices-such as the use of cover crops, which improve soil water-holding capacity, increase drainage, and provide habitat for declining pollinator populations-but right now we need to improve research and <strong>communication<\/strong> at various levels to assess the effectiveness of each strategy in different contexts.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"jUVubjvFeh\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/wildfires-long-term-damages\/\">Dagli incendi danni a lungo a termine per il suolo. Collaborations among universities, federal agencies, producers, and trusted advisers have enabled the access that is needed and produced profound improvements in the nation\u2019s soil and environmental health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h5>6) More inclusion<\/h5>\n<p>Ensuring a wider range of opinions and experiences is also critical to fostering more extensive and productive discussions on climate change and agriculture issues. &#8220;Barriers of all kinds prevent people of color from pursuing careers in <strong>science<\/strong> and agriculture, and this needs to change\u201d, the authors say. More in general, \u201cThose who come from disadvantaged backgrounds are less likely to choose a field with <strong>unreliable funding<\/strong>\u201d. The list of players expected to cooperate includes retailers but also &#8220;seed suppliers, crop nutrient and protection suppliers, consultants, <strong>bankers<\/strong> or lenders, equipment suppliers, feed suppliers, local Farm Service Agency (FSA) staff, and crop insurance agents&#8221;. In fact, each actor brings <strong>connections<\/strong>, experience and trust built up over the years in relationships with other players in the chain.
