The goal? &#8220;Accelerate the ecological transition to achieve climate neutrality&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Biodiversity, <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/horizontal-topics\/farm-fork-strategy_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Farm to Fork<\/a>, circular economy and bioeconomy. And also climate, health and governance. These are the main topics covered by the large <a href=\"https:\/\/rea.ec.europa.eu\/funding-and-grants\/horizon-europe-cluster-6-food-bioeconomy-natural-resources-agriculture-and-0_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU call<\/a> for proposals within the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/research-and-innovation\/funding\/funding-opportunities\/funding-programmes-and-open-calls\/horizon-europe\/cluster-6-food-bioeconomy-natural-resources-agriculture-and-environment_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cluster 6<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/rea.ec.europa.eu\/horizon-europe-who-should-apply_en#ecl-inpage-69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horizon<\/a> program. The initiative on <strong>&#8220;Food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture and environment&#8221;<\/strong> launched on June 22 with a total budget of almost one billion euros. The deadline for application submission is <strong>October 6<\/strong>. Selected projects will be announced between December and January.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/53bbzE2IpKc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>Soil protection included in Cluster 6<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Activities under Cluster 6 will help to accelerate the <strong>ecological transition<\/strong> required by the European Green Deal in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2050,&#8221; says the EU Commission&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/funding-tenders\/opportunities\/docs\/2021-2027\/horizon\/wp-call\/2021-2022\/wp-9-food-bioeconomy-natural-resources-agriculture-and-environment_horizon-2021-2022_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official statement<\/a>. The initiative is based on <strong>soil and plant protection<\/strong>. Which basically means supporting their ability to capture carbon, thus avoiding its loss into the atmosphere. The plan also includes R&amp;D in <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/bioeconomy-to-protect-health-soil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">circular bioeconomy<\/a> as well as the protection of ecosystems within the <strong>EU biodiversity strategy<\/strong> for 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAvoiding loss of biodiversity also has the potential of helping to avoid threats to human health in the future\u201d, says the Commission. \u201cR&amp;I will address the multiple challenges in this area, including by enabling transformative changes. This cluster will improve knowledge on the causes of <strong>biodiversity decline<\/strong>, the role of ecosystems and their services and support their restoration\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"2Ci93Fy5Gi\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/parliament-eu-soil-directive\/\">EU lawmakers call for Soil Directive<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;EU lawmakers call for Soil Directive&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/parliament-eu-soil-directive\/embed\/#?secret=2Ci93Fy5Gi\" data-secret=\"2Ci93Fy5Gi\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>More than \u20ac120 million for bioeconomy projects<\/h5>\n<p>The budget allocated for the bioeconomy-related projects amounts to \u20ac126.5 million. &#8220;Proposals for topics under this destination should set out a <strong>credible pathway<\/strong> to developing <strong>circular economy<\/strong> and bioeconomy sectors, achieving sustainable and circular management and use of natural resources, as well as prevention and removal of pollution,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/euroalert.net\/call\/4327\/call-for-proposals-2021-circular-economy-and-bioeconomy-sectors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the promoters explain<\/a>. The initiatives will focus on the impacts of the circular bioeconomy in several areas. These include policy planning at the local and regional level and redesigning the industrial sector through sustainable resource management. But also the improvement of benefits for consumers and citizens, caring for Europe&#8217;s <strong>forests<\/strong> in terms of economic, environmental and social sustainability. More specific categories include <strong>circular cities<\/strong> and new solutions for <strong>packaging<\/strong>, <strong>biomass<\/strong> and the potential of the <strong>soil microbiome<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/healthy-soil-human-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research area<\/a> which is attracting incresing attention from scientists.
