Providing new hope for native peoples worldwide<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The use of drones and smartphones that can process satellite data allows <strong>indigenous communities<\/strong> to successfully monitor their territories thus considerably limiting <strong>deforestation<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/118\/29\/e2015171118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> recently published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The survey took into account the data collected in three years which showed the excellent results achieved by the initiative. Launched in 2018, the monitoring program involved three non-governmental organizations: the <strong>Rainforest Foundation US<\/strong>, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and ORPIO an association working in 15 river basins in the Peruvian Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>Control operations conducted by nearly <strong>80 native communities<\/strong> in the Loreto region of northern <strong>Peru<\/strong> have halved illegal logging in one year. The result could inspire other similar initiatives in different areas of the world.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jM2ISiXxemQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>Drones, satellites and smartphones helping the communities<\/h5>\n<p>The activity took place in an area of <strong>76 villages<\/strong> inhabited by different communities. 37 served as a control group. The remaining 39 took part in the monitoring program based on the use of <strong>drones and smartphones<\/strong>. Thanks to satellite images registering changes in forest cover &#8211; a <a href=\"https:\/\/rainforestfoundation.org\/indigenous-communities-in-the-peruvian-amazon-equipped-with-remote-sensing-technology-can-reduce-deforestation-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a> by Rainforest Foundation says &#8211; the system, based on an algorithm developed by the University of Maryland, was supported by the online platform Global Forest Watch and its mobile application Forest Watcher.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the course of the study, indigenous technology experts in a regional data hub regularly gathered reports of suspected deforestation, including <strong>satellite photos<\/strong> and GPS information,&#8221; says Rainforest Foundation. &#8220;Once a month, couriers navigated the Amazon river and its tributaries to deliver USB drives with the information to the remote villages. Upon arrival in the village, the monitors downloaded this information onto specialized smartphone apps, which they then used to guide their patrols to the locations of the forest disturbances.&#8221; When faced with the most potentially dangerous situations involving <strong>drug traffickers<\/strong>, communities submitted evidence to the law enforcement authorities. Between March 2018 and February 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-peru-deforestation-tech-trfn-idUSKBN2EI23B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Reuters<\/a>, communities responsible for monitoring the presence of any outsiders saved <strong>8.4 more hectares<\/strong> from deforestation than their control group counterparts. In the first year, in particular, the areas under observation recorded <strong>a 52% drop in deforestation<\/strong>. The second year, the percentage <strong>was 21%<\/strong>. &#8220;These reductions in forest loss were especially concentrated in communities facing the most immediate threats from illegal <strong>gold<\/strong> mining, <strong>logging<\/strong>, and the planting of illicit crops like the coca plants used to manufacture cocaine,&#8221; Rainforest Foundation says.<\/p>\n<p>In general, the program showed once again how <strong>technology<\/strong> &#8211; including <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/innovation-technology\/soil-protection-nasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">satellites<\/a> &#8211; can improve the efficiency of soil protection efforts. &#8220;Before the model was deployed,&#8221; the Foundation says, &#8220;deforestation alerts rarely filtered down to remote rainforest communities, which lack reliable access to the internet&#8221;. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/pnas\/118\/29\/e2015367118.full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second study<\/a> published in PNAS confirms how territorial monitoring has reduced illegal exploitation of resources everywhere. Researchers now hope that the good results of the trials will inspire new large-scale conservation initiatives. With obvious implications in the fight against <strong>climate change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The research shows that the forests located in the lands of indigenous peoples around the world contain <strong>37.7 billion tons of carbon<\/strong>. That&#8217;s 29 times the annual emissions of all passenger vehicles in the world. In the two-year study period, communities prevented the destruction of about <strong>456 hectares of rainforest<\/strong>. With an estimated savings of more than 234,000 tons of CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"oJBz8HcPCn\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-deforestation-record\/\">Deforestation increases 67% in Amazon&#8217;s darkest month<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Deforestation increases 67% in Amazon&#8217;s darkest month&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-deforestation-record\/embed\/#?secret=oJBz8HcPCn\" data-secret=\"oJBz8HcPCn\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>In native areas up to 20% of deforestation can be prevented<\/h5>\n<p>From 2000 to 2015 &#8211; Rainforest Foundation says &#8211; &#8220;17 percent of Amazon deforestation occurred in national protected areas or territories registered to indigenous peoples, while <strong>83 percent<\/strong> occurred in parts of the Amazon that are neither under indigenous peoples\u2019 control nor government protected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the next decade, if nothing changes, indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin are projected to lose <strong>4.4 million hectares<\/strong> of rainforest, mostly to outsiders who encroach on their territories to cut down trees,\u201d says Cameron Ellis, senior geographer for Rainforest Foundation US. &#8220;But if the community-based forest monitoring methodology could be widely adopted and local governance strengthened, forest loss in the Amazon could be reduced by <strong>as much as 20 percent<\/strong> across all indigenous peoples\u2019 lands.&#8221; Estimates suggest the potential rescue of 415,000 of Brazil&#8217;s 2.2 million hectares of rainforest in native lands. &#8220;In Peru, 186,000 of 500,000 hectares of at-risk rainforests controlled by indigenous peoples could be saved.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to drones and satellite technology, the Peruvian Amazon has halved the deforestation of indigenous lands in one year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":8844,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[152,134],"tags":[216,153,187,165,175,198,247],"class_list":["post-8842","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-innovation-technology","category-articles","tag-amazon","tag-best-practice-en","tag-climate","tag-forests","tag-land-grabbing-en","tag-latin-america","tag-monitoraggio-en"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Smartphones and drones to halve deforestation.
