But a change needs to come soon<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pressure on <strong>Brazil<\/strong> to stop the deforestation process that is tormenting the Amazon is growing. But this time environmental organizations are not alone in making increasingly urgent appeals to the government of <strong>Jair Bolsonaro<\/strong>. On this occasion, in fact, some equally resolute and likely more powerful actors are taking the stage: <strong>large investment funds<\/strong>. In June when a group of investors sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-environment-investors\/global-investors-demand-to-meet-brazil-diplomats-over-deforestation-idUKKBN23U0L8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a letter<\/a> to various Brazilian embassies around the world asking the government for a clear change of direction. The funds, which include Norwegian Storebrand Asset Management and <strong>Nordea<\/strong> and British LGIM, manage a total portfolio of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3dd66868-3dec-4d3b-b428-10f4e9d9308d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$7 trillion<\/a>. More than four times the <a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/NY.GDP.MKTP.CD?locations=BR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">country&#8217;s GDP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"JrBzFHSVUd\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-save-amazon-usa-norway\/\">Brazil will save the Amazon&#8230; as long as US and Norway pay for it<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Brazil will save the Amazon&#8230; as long as US and Norway pay for it&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-save-amazon-usa-norway\/embed\/#?secret=JrBzFHSVUd\" data-secret=\"JrBzFHSVUd\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Brazil does not protect its forests enough<\/h5>\n<p>The group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3dd66868-3dec-4d3b-b428-10f4e9d9308d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times says<\/a>, has set a number of goals including strengthening the local <strong>Forest Code<\/strong>. Created in 1965, the legislation requires <strong>landowners<\/strong> to leave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org\/en-us\/about-us\/where-we-work\/latin-america\/brazil\/stories-in-brazil\/brazils-forest-code\/#:~:text=In%201965%2C%20Brazil%20created%20and,farm%2020%20percent%20of%20it.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up to 80%<\/a> of their land in its natural state, depending on the circumstances. In 2012, however, Brazil reformed the law by <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2019\/03\/brazils-new-forest-code-puts-vast-areas-of-protected-amazon-forest-at-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lowering<\/a> the maximum protection limit to <strong>50%<\/strong> for those properties located in states that already protect 65% of their territories as nature reserves. The new rule also sets an <strong>amnesty<\/strong> for all illegal deforestation operations that took place before 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/114\/29\/7653\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alarm<\/a> is still sounding, while the land registry reform, based on the adoption of a more modern and digitalized system, <a href=\"https:\/\/grain.org\/e\/6529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has been criticized by campaigners<\/a> for its potential tendency to benefit owners and investors against <strong>local communities<\/strong>. Image: Land Matrix\/Statista https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/19044\/countries-most-affected-by-land-grabs\/<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Amazon forest is experiencing its worst year ever<\/h5>\n<p>In May 2021, <strong>deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-deforestation-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> increased by 67%<\/a> when compared to the same period the previous year. The upward trend (<strong>17%<\/strong> year on year) is undeniable and President Jair Bolsonaro is clearly among the main defendants with the large agri-food companies as well as the financial giants that provide them crucial support.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, for example, an investigation by the NGO <strong>Global Witness<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/economics-and-finance\/uk-banks-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a> that banks in the United Kingdom have given over \u00a3900 million (about 1 billion euros) in funding to companies that contribute to deforestation on a global scale. The figure is worrying and raises questions. But it also implicitly suggests a viable way out. In order to protect the future of the Amazon, as well as other forests on the Planet, in other words, <strong>divestment<\/strong> can be crucial.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ml8Gj2QGia\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-alarm-carbon\/\">Amazzonia malata: rilascia pi\u00f9 carbonio di quanto ne assorba<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Amazzonia malata: rilascia pi\u00f9 carbonio di quanto ne assorba&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-alarm-carbon\/embed\/#?secret=ml8Gj2QGia\" data-secret=\"ml8Gj2QGia\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Investors can be crucial<\/h5>\n<p>For this reason, the funds&#8217; initiative raises interest and hope. &#8220;The investor group\u2019s members did not say what would happen if their targets were not met&#8221;, writes the Financial Times. &#8220;Some argue that continued engagement is preferable to <strong>selling<\/strong> and losing influence \u2014 a thesis often used to defend continued investment in fossil fuel producers&#8221;. But the problem is that &#8220;The <strong>Bolsonaro<\/strong> administration\u2019s cavalier disregard for the country\u2019s natural wealth is not shared by many Brazilian businesses. Companies exporting to Europe and America are alarmed by the risk of consumer or investor <strong>boycotts<\/strong> if government inaction makes the Brazil brand too toxic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even if they share historical responsibility for deforestation, in short, today financial and non-financial firms have a great power of influence. And the hope, of course, is that they decide to use it. &#8220;It is time for investors to send a <strong>$7tn signal<\/strong> to Bras\u00edlia that unless deforestation abates, they will sell,&#8221; writes the Financial Times.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A large group of investment funds asks Brazil for more commitment to the protection of its forests.
