And may not find a solution<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, UK banks provided <strong>over \u00a3900 million<\/strong>, or about \u20ac1 billion, in funding to companies contributing to <strong>deforestation<\/strong> on a global scale, <strong>Guardian<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/may\/26\/uk-banks-deforestation-environment-bill-supply-chains?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>. The figure, obtained from an investigation by the NGO <strong>Global Witness<\/strong>, further fuels the debate around the ambitious environmental protection law still <a href=\"https:\/\/bills.parliament.uk\/bills\/2593#timeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">under discussion<\/a> in the British Parliament, which should introduce new tools to fight deforestation on the Planet. The goal of its promoters is to secure approval of the new legislation before November, when <strong>COP26<\/strong> sessions are set to open in Glasgow, Scotland.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"je9rn0CMDw\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/methane-deforestation-microbes\/\">How deforestation triggers greenhouse gas emissions by soil microbes<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;How deforestation triggers greenhouse gas emissions by soil microbes&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/methane-deforestation-microbes\/embed\/#?secret=je9rn0CMDw\" data-secret=\"je9rn0CMDw\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Deforestation comes to Parliament<\/h5>\n<p>The bill, the Guardian writes, includes a requirement for companies that sell consumer goods to conduct <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Due_diligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">due diligence<\/a><\/em> on their <strong>supply chain<\/strong>. This operation aims to identify and then exclude those suppliers who distribute <strong>products linked to deforestation<\/strong>. At present day, however, the draft of the law does not provide the same requirement for banks, which should be able to continue to fund all operators without restrictions, even after the rule is approved.<\/p>\n<p>An amendment submitted by Conservative MP <strong>Neil Parish<\/strong> would extend the duty of investigation also to lenders. But this proposal, according to the Guardian, is not expected to find the support of the government.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Z4lRAVZkcQ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-save-amazon-usa-norway\/\">Brazil will save the Amazon&#8230; as long as US and Norway pay for it<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Brazil will save the Amazon&#8230; as long as US and Norway pay for it&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-save-amazon-usa-norway\/embed\/#?secret=Z4lRAVZkcQ\" data-secret=\"Z4lRAVZkcQ\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Banks and environment: an open issue<\/h5>\n<p>The responsibility of the financial sector in environmental protection is an unresolved issue. In 2019, an investigation by the organization <a href=\"https:\/\/portfolio.earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portfolio.earth<\/a> has revealed, the largest global banks of the Planet have funded <a href=\"https:\/\/portfolio.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Bankrolling-Extinction-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than $2.6 trillion<\/a> projects related to the <strong>destruction of ecosystems and wildlife<\/strong>. Some of the largest <strong>US lenders<\/strong> such as Bank of America, Citigroup and JP Morgan Chase top the blacklist compiled by reaserchers which include <strong>50 major global banks<\/strong>. The big three were ultimately responsible for 25% of the total loans.<\/p>\n<p>The overall amount of financial support for deforestation monitored by Global Witness <strong>exceeds $286 billion<\/strong>. The epicenter of the crisis is the Amazon, which has lost <strong>more than 20 million hectares<\/strong> of tropical forest between 2002 and 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-save-amazon-usa-norway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to estimates<\/a>. An area, ironically, almost as large as the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>The trend is also contributing to <strong>climate change<\/strong>. In the last ten years, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41558-021-01026-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a study<\/a> published in Nature Climate Change magazine, the Brazilian forest has released more CO2 than it was able to store, generating a <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-alarm-carbon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">670 million tons deficit<\/a>. The development of <strong>large crops<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/118\/7\/e2023787118?fbclid=IwAR2LP1ex40_Zbz45QFTYMYJjmBI1Kzq5NTStrRfUUBXYNOphAlXLoO35nQ0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a survey<\/a> by the University of Helsinki has found, also helps <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-agriculture-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to reduce rainfalls<\/a>, thus promoting an increase in temperatures.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guardian: Banks are funding global deforestation.
