A &#8220;diplomatic&#8221; and controversial message given President Bolsonaro&#8217;s climate policy<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Brazil is ready to rescue <strong>the Amazon<\/strong> by drastically reducing <strong>deforestation<\/strong>. But this operation will not be fully realized without an estimated <strong>$ 1 bn<\/strong> foreign aid according to Environment Minister <strong>Ricardo Salles<\/strong>. The plan which has been presented in a recent interview to the newspaper O Estado de Sao Paulo then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-environment\/brazil-seeks-1-billion-in-foreign-aid-to-curb-amazon-deforestation-by-30-40-environmental-minister-idUSKBN2BR0I1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported by Reuters<\/a> will certainly fuel discussions. The Brazilian government led by president <strong>Jair Bolsonaro<\/strong>, in fact, has been accused of pursuing a totally inadequate climate policy and encouraging <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/soil-war-nigeria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">land grabbing<\/a> in the country&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/27962\/bolsonaros-gift-to-perpetrators-of-illegal-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">largest green belt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"KNgoITIkvr\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/methane-deforestation-microbes\/\">How deforestation triggers greenhouse gas emissions by soil microbes<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;How deforestation triggers greenhouse gas emissions by soil microbes&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/methane-deforestation-microbes\/embed\/#?secret=KNgoITIkvr\" data-secret=\"KNgoITIkvr\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The Plan: up to 40% less deforestation in the Amazon.<\/h5>\n<p>In the interview, Salles <a href=\"https:\/\/sustentabilidade.estadao.com.br\/noticias\/geral,salles-promete-reduzir-desmatamento-da-amazonia-em-40-se-brasil-receber-us-1-bi-dos-eua,70003669383\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggested<\/a> his country would be able to reduce deforestation <strong>between 30% and 40%<\/strong> by using foreign funds in a 12-month period. The U.S., Salles said himself, has promised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/29\/climate\/biden-amazon-deforestation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to allocate $20 billion<\/a> for the protection of the Planet&#8217;s largest forest. &#8220;We are asking for one-twentieth of the amount,&#8221; the minister stated. For the moment, both Oslo and Washington have not issued any comment. However, it is clear that <strong>Brazil environmental policies<\/strong> have contributed in recent years <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2019-08\/23\/c_138332606.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to fuel a tension<\/a> with G20 countries.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"PbdOt5TqEP\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/reforestation-10-rules\/\">Looking for a perfect reforestation? The minister is perceived as being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/instant-article\/idAFE6N1TR01W\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">very sympathetic to the interests of the agribusiness sector<\/a>, one of Bolsonaro&#8217;s closest lobbying groups. Not surprisingly, over the years, the head of the department has recognized deforestation as a serious problem, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efeverde.com\/noticias\/ricardo-salles-valoraremos-tren-amazonia-aprobarlo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he has also primarily blamed the mining industry<\/a> while underestimating <strong>food sector<\/strong> responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>The argument conflicts with NGOs&#8217; accusations. &#8220;Beef production in Brazil is reported to be the leading driver of deforestation emissions across the entirety of Latin America,&#8221; <strong>Global Witness<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/campaigns\/forests\/beef-banks-and-brazilian-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has argued<\/a>. &#8220;Between 2002 and 2018, the World Resources Institute calculates <strong>more than 20 million hectares<\/strong> of primary tropical forest were lost in the Brazilian Amazon.
