Good news for climate, but soil health remains the key factor<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>A hydrated soil with a <strong>wide variety of microbes<\/strong> is likely to sequester more carbon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-020-17502-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a team of scientists<\/a> led by researchers Luiz A. Domeignoz-Horta and Kristen DeAngelis of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The discovery has significant implications since <strong>carbon storage<\/strong> capacity is a key factor in <strong>climate regulation<\/strong>. The role of microbes in managing the cycles of key soil elements and preserving soil health <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/food-safety-the-solution-lies-in-soil-microbes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is well-known<\/a>. But the experiment conducted in the study <strong>is unique<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umass.edu\/newsoffice\/article\/umass-amherst-microbiologists-clarify\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the authors say<\/a>. A higher spread means less impact on <strong>climate change<\/strong>. In order to measure the diversity effect, the researchers reproduced the ecosystem conditions in laboratory by changing some crucial properties in each case. The positive effect of diversity on carbon use efficiency is neutralized in <strong>dry conditions<\/strong> and &#8220;this suggests that there\u2019s a limit to the stress resilience with high diversity&#8221; scientists say. The experiment, in fact, shows that when drought is severe, <strong>the efficiency of microbes is diminished<\/strong> and the soil&#8217;s capacity to store carbon is compromised.
