Climate change and growing demand for sustainable solutions put forests under pressure<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Figures are clearly promising, but <strong>challenges are still ahead<\/strong>: the future for European forests is not yet written. And both regulators and stakeholders seem to be aware of this. The closest deadline is April 19th.. On this date, the <strong>European Commission<\/strong> will close <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/law\/better-regulation\/have-your-say\/initiatives\/12674-Forests-new-EU-strategy\/public-consultation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the public consultation<\/a> that was launched on January 25 following a similar initiative on <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/eu-soil-strategy-consultation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soil Strategy<\/a>. According to the promoters &#8220;The purpose of this consultation is to gather views from citizens and stakeholders, which the Commission will then feed into the preparation of the future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/policy-documents\/the-eu-forest-strategy-com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forest strategy<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The plan &#8220;will also be aimed at ensuring healthy and resilient forests that contribute significantly to biodiversity and climate goals, r<strong>educe and control natural disasters<\/strong>, secure livelihoods and support a <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/circular-bioeconomy\/circular-bioeconomy-a-network-to-promote-it-launched-in-brussels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">circular bioeconomy<\/a> and rural communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"N8shvqjpCS\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/eu-soil-strategy-consultation\/\">Soil Strategy: EU citizens asked to share their views<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Soil Strategy: EU citizens asked to share their views&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/eu-soil-strategy-consultation\/embed\/#?secret=N8shvqjpCS\" data-secret=\"N8shvqjpCS\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>European forests: +9% in three decades<\/h5>\n<p>The data <a href=\"https:\/\/foresteurope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SoEF_2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released at the end of last year by Forest Europe<\/a>, the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests, in any case, are encouraging. In the last 30 years, the <strong>European forest area has increased by 9%<\/strong>. Today, European forests cover <strong>227 million hectares<\/strong>, covering more than a third of the surface area of the Continent. The conditions for achieving the goals are certainly in place. Anccording to the researchers, &#8220;If managed sustainably, forests play an <strong>indispensable role in climate and biodiversity protection<\/strong>. In addition to providing &#8220;ecosystem services, thus also contributing to climate neutrality,&#8221; forest areas &#8220;protect soils and water resources.&#8221;At the same time, they protect soils and water resources. &#8220;And they &#8220;ensure livelihoods by contributing to the well-being of rural and urban communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y6tpwoMGB4o\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>Climate and biodiversity are grateful<\/h5>\n<p>The numbers are still a comfort. According to Forest Europe, in fact, in the last three decades &#8220;volume of wood and the weight of <strong>carbon stored in the biomass<\/strong> of European forests have grown by 50%.&#8221;\u00a0 Moreover, since the beginning of the century, &#8220;the area of forests designated for <strong>biodiversity<\/strong> conservation has increased by 65%, and the area designated for landscape conservation by 8%. Forests designated for the protection of soil, water, and other ecosystem services represent about <strong>32% of the forest area<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"dSAMvx7Z2H\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/reforestation-10-rules\/\">Looking for a perfect reforestation? Recently, the report says, &#8220;a growing frequency of large-scale forest disturbances has been observed recently, including<strong> extreme droughts<\/strong>, heat waves, extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-73273-z#:~:text=Bark%20beetle%20outbreaks%20are%20a,globally1%2C2%2C3.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bark beetle outbreaks<\/a>, and <strong>more extensive forest fires<\/strong>.&#8221; Although pollution has declined over the past 25 years, &#8220;some pollutants still locally exceed critical loads.&#8221; Finally, researchers are concerned <strong>about foliage loss of trees<\/strong> (+19% in the period 2010-2018&#8243;. While &#8220;the relatively low net revenue of forest enterprises poses a risk for forest management.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"I90scA1W1X\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/trees-impact-climate-soil\/\">Which are the best performing trees for climate mitigation? However, the picture depicted by the researchers sends a clear message. <strong>Climate change<\/strong> and the growing demand for sustainable solutions are expected to put increasing pressure on forests. &#8220;Europe has been in <strong>a state of balance<\/strong> between the components of sustainable forest management for many decades&#8221; according to the report. &#8220;The new pressures and challenges may, however, lead to changes in this equilibrium.&#8221; That&#8217;s why &#8220;transition from one state of balance to another would necessitate holistic and evidence-based decisions, to ensure that all aspects of sustainability are fully considered.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forests coverage in Europe has grown 9% since 1990.
