Its goal? Increasing soil carbon capture through financial incentives. With climate neutrality and inclusive agriculture looming in the background,<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Costa Rica<\/strong> aims to increase the organic carbon content of soils and make markets pay for ecological services trough the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/documents\/card\/en\/c\/ca6522en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RECSOIL<\/a> program. The initiative is still on track after being announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/america\/agencias\/2020\/12\/02\/costa-rica-apuesta-por-recarbonizar-el-suelo-para-enfrentar-el-cambio-climatico\/?outputType=amp-type\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the end of 2020<\/a>. &#8220;We need new approaches in agriculture and food to improve productivity and protect natural systems and biodiversity,&#8221; said <strong>FAO<\/strong> Director-General Qu Dongyu. The program, he said, also involves &#8220;Mexico and <strong>other Latin American countries<\/strong>.&#8221; The commitment of the Central American nation, in any case, is very relevant because of its territory peculiarities. Despite covering just 0.03% of the Earth&#8217;s surface, Costa Rica is home to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.costarica-embassy.org\/index.php?q=node\/12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">barely 6%<\/a> of the world&#8217;s <strong>biodiversity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"uPibjO9A2l\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/map-will-help-climate-and-soil\/\">A new map will reveal the CO2 sequestration potential of our soils<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;A new map will reveal the CO2 sequestration potential of our soils&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/map-will-help-climate-and-soil\/embed\/#?secret=uPibjO9A2l\" data-secret=\"uPibjO9A2l\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>RECSOIL aims to increase soil carbon capture<\/h5>\n<p>The role of soil in CO2 sequestration is <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/innovation-technology\/map-will-help-climate-and-soil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notoriously crucial<\/a>. &#8220;A healthy soil stores more carbon than that stored in the atmosphere and vegetation combined and soil carbon can remain <strong>sequestered in the soil for thousands of years<\/strong>,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/ca6522en\/CA6522EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAO reports<\/a>. However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/i6950e\/i6950e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to some estimates<\/a>, &#8220;the world\u2019s cultivated soils have lost between 25 to 75 percent of their original carbon stock, which has been <strong>released into the atmosphere<\/strong> in the form of CO2.&#8221;\u00a0 This is primarily due to &#8220;to unsustainable management practices resulting in land degradation and amplifying <strong>climate change<\/strong> and its impacts.&#8221; For these reasons, the <strong>RECSOIL<\/strong> program aims to increase carbon capture to offset global greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5079\" style=\"width: 871px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5079\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5080\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/RECSOIL.jpg\" alt=\"Un suolo sano immagazzina pi\u00f9 carbonio di quello catturato\u00a0 dall'atmosfera e dalla vegetazione. This work is available under a CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 IGO licence<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Financial incentives for carbon sequestration<\/h5>\n<p>Designed to &#8220;to support and improve the national and regional GHG mitigation and carbon sequestration initiatives&#8221; the FAO plan also targets financial markets. The RECSOIL system, in fact, &#8220;entails a scheme whereby qualifying projects <strong>will be awarded credits<\/strong> for GHGs mitigated and carbon sequestered2. The program will include financial incentives &#8220;that are verifiable and quantifiable in line with the \u201c1 credit = 1 t CO2 standard &#8220;. Credits can be therefore <strong>traded in a market<\/strong> supervised by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/c\/clearinghouse.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clearinghouse<\/a>. In other words, trading takes place in a genuine exchange market where <strong>farmers<\/strong> may cash in their credits.<\/p>\n<p>The concept is well known and actually controversial. In the <strong>U.S.<\/strong>, where a similar proposal has been launched in recent months by a number of associations and <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2020\/09\/24\/are-carbon-markets-for-farmers-worth-the-hype\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">may be put in motion soon<\/a>, some critics have expressed their concern. Recently, for instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iatp.org\/carbon-markets-and-agriculture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a study<\/a> by the <strong>Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy<\/strong> of Minneapolis highlighted the risks of the so-called &#8220;financialization of land&#8221;. A tale of success<\/h5>\n<p>In any case, Costa Rica&#8217;s is a successful story. Through the <strong>Payment for Environmental Services<\/strong> program, in fact, for over 20 years the country has paid small and medium-sized forest and plantation owners for storing carbon dioxide. Since the 1980s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/america\/agencias\/2020\/12\/02\/costa-rica-apuesta-por-recarbonizar-el-suelo-para-enfrentar-el-cambio-climatico\/?outputType=amp-type\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to data reported in the media<\/a>, the nation&#8217;s forest land cover has doubled to 52 percent of the entire country surface. &#8220;Costa Rica has been a <strong>source of inspiration and innovation<\/strong>,&#8221; said the Spanish government&#8217;s Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/costarica\/noticias\/detail-events\/en\/c\/1334922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speaking<\/a> at a recent RECSOIL presentation event. &#8220;It happened when the country bet on getting greener,&#8221; she added. &#8220;And it&#8217;s happening now that the nation has set its goals for climate neutrality and inclusive agricultural practices.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Costa Rica wants to increase soil carbon capture through the Recsoil program.
