By contrast, some sustainable farming practices have proven capable not only of reducing their impact on the ecosystems in which they are implemented but, in some cases, of actively promoting their <strong>regeneration<\/strong>. One such example is <strong>agriwilding<\/strong>, an agricultural approach that combines productive perennial crops with ecological restoration processes. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0006320726002776?via%3Dihub#s0045\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in <em>Biological Conservation<\/em>, it may offer an effective strategy for <strong>producing food<\/strong> while simultaneously supporting the recovery of biodiversity.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Ky8XefVILC\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/palm-oil-coconut-soy-global-biodiversity\/\">Olio di palma, cocco e soia cancellano l&#8217;1,5% della biodiversit\u00e0 globale<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cOlio di palma, cocco e soia cancellano l\u20191,5% della biodiversit\u00e0 globale\u201d \u2014 Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/palm-oil-coconut-soy-global-biodiversity\/embed\/#?secret=AtGVJFEzYF#?secret=Ky8XefVILC\" data-secret=\"Ky8XefVILC\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The biodiversity crisis in agricultural landscapes<\/h5>\n<p>The research, conducted by scientists from the <strong>Vrije Universiteit Brussel<\/strong> and the <strong>University of Louvain<\/strong> in Belgium, addresses one of the central challenges of today\u2019s ecological crisis: how to reconcile food security with the need to reverse the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/biodiversity-great-britain-2050\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environmental crisis<\/a>. \u201cWorldwide biodiversity loss, particularly in <strong>agricultural landscapes<\/strong>, is strongly driven by habitat degradation and fragmentation associated with agricultural intensification\u201d, the study notes, explaining that the expansion of intensive farming has reduced the <strong>availability of key habitat features<\/strong> for many species, including hedgerows, trees, species-rich grasslands and uncultivated areas, contributing in particular to the decline of insects.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Among the groups most severely affected are <strong>butterflies and moths<\/strong>, which play a vital role in ecosystem functioning by contributing to pollination, providing food for numerous animal species and supporting ecological networks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As noted above, agriwilding offers one possible solution. But what makes this approach so distinctive? According to the authors, it is based on \u201cperennial polycultures that combine <strong>productive trees <\/strong>and<strong> shrubs with species-rich grasslands<\/strong> while allowing partial ecological succession\u201d. Unlike the better-known concept of rewilding, which aims to restore self-sustaining natural ecosystems, agriwilding retains a productive agricultural component while integrating food-producing species with ecological processes.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"IHJWgOE3NJ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/cattle-pastures-trees-biodiversity\/\">Nei pascoli alberati la biodiversit\u00e0 cresce del 44%<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cNei pascoli alberati la biodiversit\u00e0 cresce del 44%\u201d \u2014 Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/cattle-pastures-trees-biodiversity\/embed\/#?secret=6JnjGOslje#?secret=IHJWgOE3NJ\" data-secret=\"IHJWgOE3NJ\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Agriwilding supports Lepidoptera<\/h5>\n<p>To assess the potential of agriwilding, the researchers studied <strong>De Wildernis<\/strong>, a two-hectare site in the Aerebeek Valley, <strong>Flanders<\/strong>, which was transformed in 2009 from conventional farmland into a system combining perennial crops, trees, shrubs, ponds and managed grasslands. The site was compared with conventional agricultural fields and nature-managed areas within the same valley. Drawing on <strong>15 years of observations<\/strong>, the researchers tracked the evolution of Lepidoptera communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong-term butterfly observations indicate that the agriwilding site <strong>supported a high proportion of the regional species<\/strong> pool following land-use conversion\u201d, the study explains. In a subsequent standardised monitoring programme designed to compare different land management systems, De Wildernis showed the highest butterfly diversity, with <strong>19 species recorded in a single year<\/strong>, compared with 10 in conventional farmland and 12 in nature-managed areas.<\/p>\n<p>The findings for moths were equally striking: <strong>160 species<\/strong> were recorded at the agriwilding site, compared with <strong>82 in conventional farmland<\/strong>. \u201cFor moths, species richness matched that of the nature reserves\u201d, the authors <a href=\"https:\/\/press.vub.ac.be\/producing-food-while-restoring-biodiversity-vub-study-highlights-the-potential-of-agriwilding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">note<\/a>. \u201cBut the species composition differed substantially, suggesting that agriwilding creates habitat for species that are scarce or absent elsewhere\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"JO3Y6V4jrt\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/farming-peatlands-carbon-biodiversity\/\">La coltivazione adattata nelle torbiere fa bene anche alla biodiversit\u00e0<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cLa coltivazione adattata nelle torbiere fa bene anche alla biodiversit\u00e0\u201d \u2014 Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/farming-peatlands-carbon-biodiversity\/embed\/#?secret=R8pP8RifpX#?secret=JO3Y6V4jrt\" data-secret=\"JO3Y6V4jrt\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Agriculture can be part of the solution<\/h5>\n<p>The study\u2019s findings are particularly significant in the European context. Butterfly populations across <strong>Europe<\/strong> have declined sharply in recent decades and, in Flanders, where the research was conducted, many species are now threatened or have disappeared altogether. For this reason, the authors argue that agriwilding should be incorporated into biodiversity support schemes under the European Union\u2019s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAgriwilding <strong>could be included as a subsidised measure for farmers<\/strong>, either as an integral component of productive land or alongside annual crops\u201d, the authors emphasise, \u201cthereby supporting biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem services, such as pollination and natural pest control\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the researchers, further studies will now be needed to determine whether these results can be replicated on a larger scale. Even so, the findings show once again that, through land management designed around ecological processes, agricultural landscapes can become part of the solution to the biodiversity crisis, creating
