This is the conclusion of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-026-03619-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> conducted by the Environmental Change Institute at the <strong>University of Oxford<\/strong> and published in <em>Communications Earth &amp; Environment<\/em>. The research analysed more than one million reported cases of malaria, dengue, Chagas disease and leishmaniasis across the region&#8217;s municipalities over a five-year period.<\/p>\n<p>The findings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eci.ox.ac.uk\/news\/amazon-insect-borne-diseases-follow-changing-landscapes-new-study-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> <strong>Milton Barbosa<\/strong>, an ECI researcher and co-author of the study, show that these diseases tend to cluster in distinct \u201chealth landscapes\u201d, shaped by the interaction between environmental change, economic activities, social conditions and urban development. To investigate this, the researchers focused on so-called <strong>ecosyndemics<\/strong>, namely the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2025.07.24.25331762v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interactions<\/a> between social, biological and ecological factors that drive the spread of disease. In essence, this approach reflects the long-<a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/healthy-soil-human-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recognised<\/a> link between <strong>human health, ecosystem balance<\/strong> and models of development.<\/p>\n<p>The Amazon, in particular, encompasses a wide variety of territories, each characterised by different forms of <strong>land use<\/strong> and social organisation. It is also home to numerous Indigenous peoples and, more broadly, to traditional communities and other groups that rely heavily on forest resources and rural economies, engaging in activities such as extracting forest products and subsistence farming. Malaria accounted for <strong>75% of all reported cases<\/strong>, followed by dengue (20.1%), cutaneous leishmaniasis (4.3%), visceral leishmaniasis (0.5%) and Chagas disease (0.1%). The results revealed distinct geographical patterns.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the <strong>most remote<\/strong> densely forested areas, for example, \u201crural multidimensional poverty, forest core areas, and<strong> mining activities<\/strong> are the most important shared drivers of malaria and Chagas disease both in urban and rural areas\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By contrast, areas experiencing the expansion of intensive agriculture, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/grazing-degradation-soil-brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cattle ranching<\/a>, infrastructure and urbanisation display different risk profiles, with stronger associations between dengue and cutaneous leishmaniasis, or between visceral leishmaniasis, urban poverty, wildfires and environmental change.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43891\" style=\"width: 1991px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43891\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43891\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/malattie-e-attivita.jpg\" alt=\"Summary diagrams of technoproductive trajectories (TTs) and their characteristics associated with the corresponding diseases, organised across five dimensions: land cover, mobility, economy (TT class), social conditions and climate anomalies. Different forms of land use \u2014 from forest conservation to industrial agriculture \u2014 alter the habitats of insect vectors, influence human mobility and alter the socioeconomic conditions of local communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTTs are not merely a backdrop\u201d, concludes the study. \u201cRather, they actively shape how environmental transformations, vector ecology, and socio-economic inequalities converge, ultimately moulding distinct \u2018ecosyndemic\u2019 landscapes in the Amazon\u201d.
