Through this practice, in fact, it is possible to achieve a significant increase in biodiversity compared with traditional pastureland. This is the conclusion of a study published in the journal Ecological Applications.

The research, conducted by the Justus Liebig University of Giessen in Germany, provides the first global quantitative synthesis of silvopastoral systems, that is, of the specific agroforestry strategy based on planting trees in pastures, the authors explain. In the Amazon Basin alone, for example, more than three quarters of deforested land has been converted into pasture, with negative effects on local ecosystems and a global impact on biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration. A trend that is expected to intensify in the future.

“With rising incomes in the developing world, demand for animal products will continue to grow and could further drive the expansion of cattle pasturelands at the expense of native forests and other biodiversity-rich ecosystems”, the study continues. However, developing countries are still home to around 1 billion smallholder farmers who derive from livestock farming the income and resources necessary for their livehood.
