One example is the so-called <strong>snow drought<\/strong>, which is increasingly widespread in Northern Hemisphere regions where crops depend on winter snow cover. Due to <strong>milder winters<\/strong> and reduced snowfall, <strong>winter wheat<\/strong>\u2014one of the world\u2019s most important staple crops\u2014becomes more vulnerable to frost and water scarcity, with potentially significant impacts on yields.<\/p>\n<p>An alert comes from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43016-026-01302-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by <strong>The Hong Kong Polytechnic University<\/strong> (PolyU), which used new analytical techniques to assess the impact of the phenomenon and provide <strong>new scientific evidence<\/strong> supporting the need for more climate-resilient agricultural systems.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"lZ43noAdCj\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/europa-commissione-siccita-futuro\/\">L\u2019Europa far\u00e0 sempre pi\u00f9 spesso i conti con la siccit\u00e0<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cL\u2019Europa far\u00e0 sempre pi\u00f9 spesso i conti con la siccit\u00e0\u201d \u2014 Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/europa-commissione-siccita-futuro\/embed\/#?secret=DX1yQJ1fPR#?secret=lZ43noAdCj\" data-secret=\"lZ43noAdCj\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Increasing snow drought conditions<\/h5>\n<p>In the colder months, snow cover plays a crucial role for seasonal crops, protecting them from frost and providing a <strong>valuable water reserve<\/strong>. Thanks to the high air content within snowflakes, this layer acts as a <strong>thermal insulator<\/strong>, trapping ground heat and preventing root freezing. As it slowly melts, it releases water gradually, supporting crop growth throughout the winter.<\/p>\n<p>However, the study notes that over the past sixty years, the frequency of snow droughts in winter wheat-growing areas across the Northern Hemisphere has increased significantly. The share of affected farmland has risen from 46\u201354% in 1960\u20131970 to <strong>70\u201399% in the 2010\u20132020 decade<\/strong>. These figures indicate that the phenomenon has shifted from a <strong>localized risk<\/strong> to a widespread issue.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"fUYrXvfKSB\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/siccita-situazione-italia-anbi\/\">La neve si scioglie. To address this gap, researchers developed a new model called <strong>XGB-SHAP<\/strong>. The system combines a machine learning algorithm with so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Explainable_artificial_intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explainable artificial intelligence<\/a>, a tool that makes AI decision-making understandable and therefore more transparent and supervisable.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This approach not only enables the analysis of large datasets on climate and agriculture, but also helps quantify the <strong>relative contribution<\/strong> of each factor to wheat yields.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, the method makes it possible to isolate the direct impact of snow droughts from other variables such as temperature and precipitation. In East Asia, meanwhile, the yield benefits from longer growing seasons driven by warmer winters are gradually declining, while the balance between <strong>water availability and temperature<\/strong> is becoming increasingly unstable.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWinter wheat croplands have experienced an <strong>increase in snow drought frequency<\/strong> (5.3\u20136.7% more events per decade) from 1960 to 2020\u201d, the study reports.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The data also reveal \u201ca significant increase in yield sensitivity to snow water equivalent index over 25% of Northern Hemisphere winter wheat croplands\u201d. The study further identifies three main drivers increasing wheat vulnerability to snow droughts: \u201cElevated fertilizer application rates, increased freezing stress and slightly decreased precipitation\u201d. Early identification of areas exposed to snow droughts, and intervention before impacts reach crop yields, will be essential to ensure <strong>stable food production<\/strong>.
