The greater the soil degradation, the lower the score<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>Deforestation of <strong>mangrove<\/strong> forests has a significant impact on soil health. Measuring the impact of this phenomenon, however, is not straightforward, partly because the available tools do not currently seem adequate. For this reason, a group of Brazilian researchers has attempted to offer a new solution by proposing a new indicator capable of assessing the condition of these soils at different stages: degradation, intact condition and recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Described in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-025-30909-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> published in the journal Scientific Reports, the <strong>Soil Health Index (SHI)<\/strong> ranges from a minimum score of 0 (worst condition) to a maximum of 1 (best) and shows that healthy mangroves can provide ecosystem services at nearly full capacity. These environments cover 1.4 million hectares in <strong>Brazil<\/strong> (making them the second-largest area in the world after Indonesia\u2019s) and host a rich <strong>biodiversity<\/strong>, including many marine species, and play an <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/climate-biodiversity-mangroves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">essential role<\/a> in protecting coastal regions by <strong>acting as natural barriers<\/strong> against storms, erosion, and flooding. They also demonstrate an <strong>extraordinary capacity for carbon sequestration<\/strong>, which, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/climate-change-mangroves-maldives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a>, could prevent total emissions of over <strong>21 billion tons of CO2<\/strong> on a global scale.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"JV3t0IyFge\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/saudi-arabia-bets-on-mangroves\/\">Saudi Arabia also bets on mangroves<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Saudi Arabia also bets on mangroves&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/saudi-arabia-bets-on-mangroves\/embed\/#?secret=KnUTj4RUll#?secret=JV3t0IyFge\" data-secret=\"JV3t0IyFge\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The new index<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cMangrove forests provide critical soil-related ecosystem services (ES), including <strong>carbon sequestration<\/strong>, contaminant retention, and nutrient cycling\u2014all closely linked to soil health,\u201d explain researchers from the University of S\u00e3o Paulo, authors of the study. \u201cHowever, <strong>land-use change<\/strong> and pollution increasingly threaten mangrove soils, compromising their functionality and ES provision.\u201d Strategies to combat degradation, they continue, can only be developed based on a careful analysis of soil health using key indicators.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>However, they add, \u201cdespite their importance, soil health <strong>indexing methods<\/strong> for mangroves <strong>remain underdeveloped<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The new index, as noted in an <a href=\"https:\/\/agencia.fapesp.br\/researchers-create-index-to-assess-soil-health-in-mangroves\/57400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> by the S\u00e3o Paulo Research Foundation (<strong>FAPESP<\/strong>), a public entity managed by the local government control, was constructed using a set of variables representing the main physical, chemical, and biological processes responsible for soil function. Here, the SHI index revealed contrasting conditions: \u201cMature mangroves showed the <strong>highest SHI values (0.99\u2009\u00b1\u20090.03)<\/strong>, while degraded sites had the <strong>lowest<\/strong> (0.25\u2009\u00b1\u20090.01),\u201d the study explains.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Regions replanted nine and thirteen years ago, however,\u201cdisplayed <strong>intermediate SHI values<\/strong> (0.37\u2009\u00b1\u20090.01 at 9 years; 0.52\u2009\u00b1\u20090.02 at 13 years), indicating gradual recovery.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The capacity to provide ecosystem services also followed the same trend. Ultimately, the researchers conclude, \u201cthe SHI effectively captured soil health changes across degradation and restoration gradients and is a promising tool to inform decision-makers, support conservation planning, and communicate complex data in accessible formats.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"e7qwrYJ1LX\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-biodiversity-mangroves\/\">Young Kenyans take care of the planet by restoring local mangroves<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Young Kenyans take care of the planet by restoring local mangroves&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-biodiversity-mangroves\/embed\/#?secret=C6y1dCcsKt#?secret=e7qwrYJ1LX\" data-secret=\"e7qwrYJ1LX\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Ecosystems in Danger<\/h5>\n<p>According to <strong>Hermano Melo Queiroz<\/strong>, a professor in the Department of Geography at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo, as quoted by FAPESP, \u201cthe results debunk the idea that the ecosystem is resilient to anthropogenic interventions.\u201d In contrast, he explains, \u201cWe show that it <strong>can be degraded at a very rapid rate<\/strong>. But the good news is that the system also recovers quickly, provided that restoration is carried out in an assisted and elaborate manner, respecting the local conditions of the environment in which it\u2019s located.\u201d Finally, the authors note that the index is designed to include ecosystem-specific information across different regions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Further research is now needed to understand<strong> what kind of carbon is accumulating<\/strong> in the restored soils and, above all, how <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ending-grazing-stable-carbon-grasslands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stable<\/a> it is.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the meantime, the tool offers important support for conservation efforts aimed at protecting a type of environment that has long been endangered. Between 1980 and 2000, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneearth.org\/new-study-finds-catastrophic-loss-of-mangroves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a> by the U.S. think tank One Earth, the world <strong>lost approximately 35% of its mangroves<\/strong>. Furthermore, between 1996 and 2016, the planet reportedly experienced an <strong>additional 4.3% net loss of these trees<\/strong>. This indicates that the rate of regrowth has not been sufficient to offset the losses, which experts attribute primarily to deforestation and climate change, which contributes to rising sea levels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brazilian researchers have developed an indicator to measure the ability of mangroves to provide ecosystem services, ranging from biodiversity conservation to carbon sequestration.
