In addition, a further previously underappreciated benefit is also becoming evident: the positive impact of this practice on biodiversity. This is highlighted by a new <a href=\"https:\/\/besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/2688-8319.70169\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> conducted by the <strong>Royal Society for the Protection of Birds<\/strong> (RSPB) and the <strong>University of Cambridge<\/strong>, which shows that this approach not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but can also foster richer and more diverse bird communities than those found in drained agricultural meadows.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"EDcgwnbP18\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/peatlands-drainage-emissions\/\">Drainage channels in peatlands produce significant emissions<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Drainage channels in peatlands produce significant emissions&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/peatlands-drainage-emissions\/embed\/#?secret=3AtDVfJu8b#?secret=EDcgwnbP18\" data-secret=\"EDcgwnbP18\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Drainage turns peatlands into carbon sources<\/h5>\n<p>Over time, wetlands <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/climate-change-peatlands-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have been drained<\/a> to make way for conventional farming. These efforts led to the <strong>gradual disappearance<\/strong> of most of these ecosystems, which represent one of the planet\u2019s largest carbon sinks. Peatlands, in fact, \u201cplay a disproportionate role in the carbon cycle, covering only 3% of Earth&#8217;s terrestrial surface yet <strong>storing 30% of its carbon<\/strong>,\u201d emphasizes the study published in Ecological Solutions and Evidence, a journal of the British Ecological Society.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>However, the study continues, &#8220;through degradation from <strong>drainage for agriculture<\/strong>, forestry and peat extraction, drained peatlands currently <strong>emit an estimated 5%<\/strong> of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and by 2050, this figure is predicted <strong>to rise to 8%<\/strong>, and <strong>25% of Earth&#8217;s peatlands<\/strong> will likely be in a degraded state.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, drainage transforms wetlands <strong>from carbon sinks into carbon sources<\/strong>, thereby contributing to climate change. <strong>Paludiculture<\/strong> is proposed as a response to this problem. By conserving these environments, indeed, we can prevent their drainage\u2014and the consequent release of carbon\u2014while paving the way for growing crops specifically adapted to these conditions. This approach offers significant benefits for climate mitigation and beyond.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Pvcbi7LFUV\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/enhanced-weathering-tropical-peatlands\/\">Enhanced weathering is a threat to tropical peatlands<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Enhanced weathering is a threat to tropical peatlands&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/enhanced-weathering-tropical-peatlands\/embed\/#?secret=YPtBSAWGc8#?secret=Pvcbi7LFUV\" data-secret=\"Pvcbi7LFUV\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>In cultivated wetlands, the number of species triples<\/h5>\n<p>To demonstrate this, the study examined <strong>three different environments in the Netherlands<\/strong>: natural wetlands, peatland sites cultivated with Typha, and drained, grazed agricultural meadows. The results are particularly significant. In these areas, \u201cpaludiculture hosted a<strong> range of generalist and wetland specialist bird species<\/strong>, including several that are considered of European or global conservation concern\u201d, researchers explain. Moreover, \u201cpredicted bird abundance in paludiculture was comparable to natural wetland (30.8 birds per hectare) and significantly higher than on grasslands (10.5\u2009per hectare).\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In other words, reed cultivation sites <strong>host about three times as many birds<\/strong> as drained grasslands. Thus reaching levels similar to those of natural wetlands.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Among the species observed are both birds typical of aquatic environments\u2014such as the great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) and the reed bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus)\u2014and grassland species, creating hybrid and particularly rich communities. \u201cOur study shows that paludiculture can support overall bird abundance on par with wetlands, and function as a habitat bridging agricultural and wetland species assemblages by providing resources for both generalist and wetland-associated species,\u201d the researchers conclude.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"65XrMZOroD\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/congo-tropical-peatlands-40k-years\/\">Congo peatlands are over 40,000 years old, researchers find<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Congo peatlands are over 40,000 years old, researchers find&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/congo-tropical-peatlands-40k-years\/embed\/#?secret=6ngnE4CIrU#?secret=65XrMZOroD\" data-secret=\"65XrMZOroD\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Innovation and investments for climate neutrality<\/h5>\n<p>This form of agriculture, therefore, could help reduce emissions associated with <strong>land use in peatlands<\/strong>, thereby supporting the goal of climate neutrality. Harnessing the potential of wetland farming, the scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/media-centre\/flood-tolerant-crops-could-support-nature-recovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">note<\/a>, will require <strong>investment<\/strong>, appropriate policies, and innovation: in this way, this practice could become a pillar of a more resilient agricultural system, capable of responding to environmental challenges without sacrificing productivity.<\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s findings, they conclude, \u201csuggest that paludiculture can be a multifunctional land use, enhancing <strong>biodiversity<\/strong> in addition to other known benefits.\u201d In this way, this practice can become a system that integrates elements of different ecosystems within
