Applications are open until November 9 this year<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>Raising awareness among students, teachers, educators, and citizens about the importance of <strong>soil as a vital resource<\/strong> for ecosystems, food security, and climate mitigation. As well as inspiring <strong>creativity<\/strong>, scientific experiments, and sharing knowledge. These are the goals of the international ECHO Soil Challenge \u2013 Soil Stories competition, open to schools and participants in citizen science activities under the ECHO project\u2014an initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/ambiente\/echo-salute-suolo-cittadini\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched in 2023<\/a> as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/funding\/funding-opportunities\/funding-programmes-and-open-calls\/horizon-europe_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horizon Europe<\/a> programme and coordinated by the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in collaboration with various partners, including the Re Soil Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Officially launched on March 10, the <strong>contest<\/strong> is divided into <strong>four categories<\/strong>: children aged 6 to 10 (elementary school), students aged 11 to 13 (middle school), high school students aged 14 to 19, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/echosoil.eu\/it\/for-ambassadors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ECHO Soil Ambassadors<\/a>. Three winners will be selected for each category. Entries must be submitted via the <a href=\"https:\/\/echosoil.eu\/echo-soil-challenge-soil-stories#contestform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online form<\/a> by November 9, 2026.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"wvXYaqEbRv\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soul-project-eu-bioproducts\/\">SOUL project gets started, five EU countries will test new bio-based products<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;SOUL project gets started, five EU countries will test new bio-based products&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soul-project-eu-bioproducts\/embed\/#?secret=9f39T36tVp#?secret=wvXYaqEbRv\" data-secret=\"wvXYaqEbRv\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Photographs, projects, podcasts, and much more<\/h5>\n<p>Open to residents of Italy, Poland, Spain, Scotland, Greece, Romania, Germany, Portugal, and Finland, the contest welcomes creative, scientific, or educational works developed by ECHO Soil Ambassadors as well as by classes or groups under the guidance of teachers or educators. Entries may include drawings, collages, photographs, <strong>infographics<\/strong>, experiments, and<strong> educational projects<\/strong>, as well as videos, reels, <strong>podcasts<\/strong>, and musical content dedicated to the theme of soil.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Submissions, in particular, may be inspired by the <strong>ECHO sampling kit<\/strong> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soilabforteens.eu\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SoiLab for Teens<\/a> educational tool, designed for hands-on activities in schools.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Participants, the organizers specify, are <strong>free to reinterpret<\/strong> these tools using different creative languages and approaches. All details on how to submit entries are outlined on the contest&#8217;s official <a href=\"https:\/\/echosoil.eu\/it\/echo-soil-challenge-soil-stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">page<\/a>. To further support participants, an introductory <strong>webinar<\/strong> in English is scheduled for March 27, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. which will explain the contest\u2019s objectives and procedures. Projects will be assessed using a common evaluation grid that considers three main criteria: creativity and originality in telling the story of soil, scientific accuracy of the content, and communicative and educational effectiveness in conveying the value of this resource and promoting sustainable practices. The <strong>winners<\/strong> will be announced in December 2026.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the official ECHO Soil Challenge \u2013 Soil Stories certificate, winners will have the opportunity to present <strong>their project<\/strong> during the final webinar scheduled for January 15, 2027, as well as participate in a virtual meeting with a project expert and receive special gifts. The initiative specifically aims to <strong>promote land protection<\/strong> by collecting and generating new data on the health of European soils through public engagement, using the so-called \u201ccitizen science\u201d approach.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>That is, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Citizen_science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research method<\/a> based on interaction <strong>between citizens and experts<\/strong>, which assigns citizens the role of active participants capable of learning from experience.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Re Soil Foundation<\/strong> collaborates on all activities planned by the project, with a particular focus on communication, training, dissemination, educational activities, and local events.
