This is the goal of <strong>SOUL<\/strong> (Sustainable, biO-based and biodegradable-in-soil soLutions), a <a href=\"https:\/\/soul-biobased.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">project<\/a> co-funded by Horizon Europe as part of the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbe.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBE JU<\/a>), the public-private partnership between the European Union and the BIC, the consortium that funds circular bio-industry projects on the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Announced in February this year, the initiative brings together 18 partners from five EU countries, including Spain&#8217;s Fundaci\u00f3n AITIIP, which coordinates the project, and Italy&#8217;s <strong>Novamont, Re Soil Foundation, and Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna<\/strong>. The program involves the development of new <strong>highly renewable<\/strong> <strong>products<\/strong> designed to biodegrade completely in the soil at the end of their life cycle, thus minimizing their environmental impact.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"cdU7hj6WH8\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ue-biorecer-waste-bioproducts\/\">Researchers use circular strategies to turn waste into bioproducts<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Researchers use circular strategies to turn waste into bioproducts&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ue-biorecer-waste-bioproducts\/embed\/#?secret=9wpL6ITXmn#?secret=cdU7hj6WH8\" data-secret=\"cdU7hj6WH8\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>New solutions for the bio-based products industry<\/h5>\n<p>The SOUL project is structured into eight work packages covering the entire value chain, from research on biomaterials to <strong>communication, training, and stakeholder engagement<\/strong> activities, which are the particular focus of the Re Soil Foundation. As part of the design efforts, SOUL is committed to developing and validating <a href=\"https:\/\/soul-biobased.eu\/solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">11 different solutions<\/a> in the industry of bioproducts made with <strong>over 95% renewable raw materials<\/strong> from sustainable supply chains, including agricultural residues, by-products from the agri-food industry, and low-impact crops from marginal land.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Compatible with existing <strong>bioplastics processing<\/strong> technologies, these new proposals will be tested in real conditions in <strong>five European countries<\/strong> with different climatic profiles: Spain, Italy, Portugal, Poland, and Ireland.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The aim of the tests is to verify the actual biodegradability in soil and the compatibility of the solutions themselves with different end-of-life scenarios, including <strong>composting<\/strong>, reuse, and recycling. SOUL experts will then assess the safety, sustainability, and <strong>circularity<\/strong> of each product throughout its entire life cycle, ensuring measurable greenhouse gas savings and providing strategic recommendations for the sector. Other goals include reducing the carbon footprint and preventing the accumulation of <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/microplastics-europe-at-risk-target-2030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">microplastics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"MiMfe86r3Y\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/circular-economy-biobased-industries\/\">Circular bioeconomy, biobased industries need specific codes<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Circular bioeconomy, biobased industries need specific codes&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/circular-economy-biobased-industries\/embed\/#?secret=tkO5PGuKLF#?secret=MiMfe86r3Y\" data-secret=\"MiMfe86r3Y\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The projects<\/h5>\n<p>Designed to meet high performance requirements in bioplastic processing while ensuring improvements in mechanical properties during use, the solutions aim to <strong>preserve soil health<\/strong>. The list includes, among others, ultra-thin and multi-layer <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/mulch-biodegradable-content-organic-soil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mulching<\/a> films also developed by Novamont and tested in Italy on tomato, almond, and olive crops.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Designed <strong>to protect plants<\/strong> in the early stages of growth, these sheets can be left in the soil at the end of the cycle, where they biodegrade without leaving any residue behind.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other examples of products include <strong>controlled-release fertilizers<\/strong> with a bio-based spray coating that regulates the release of nutrients for about a month before degrading in the soil.
