This is suggested by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41893-025-01750-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> conducted by <strong>Stirling University<\/strong> in the United Kingdom, which highlights the importance of factors such as deforestation, agriculture, rapid urban growth, and habitat fragmentation in promoting the spread of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/topics\/topic\/biological-hazards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">zoonotic<\/a> diseases, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/covid-19-soil-micronutrients-fatality-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19<\/a>, malaria, and, in particular, those transmitted by mosquitoes, rodents, and bats.<\/p>\n<p>The study, carried out in cooperation with Bangor University and with the contribution of the <a href=\"https:\/\/isid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Society for Infectious Diseases<\/a>, has shown that certain changes can <strong>bring humans and wildlife closer together<\/strong>, compromising the natural ecological barriers that usually limit the transmission of pathogens.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"IGemriThBJ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/pollution-soil-diseases-cardiovascular\/\">Soil pollution causes the spread of cardiovascular diseases<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Soil pollution causes the spread of cardiovascular diseases&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/pollution-soil-diseases-cardiovascular\/embed\/#?secret=tXFg0r4sRZ#?secret=IGemriThBJ\" data-secret=\"IGemriThBJ\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Interventions on soil promote the transmission of diseases<\/h5>\n<p>Although investment in restoring degraded environments and mitigating climate change and <strong>loss of biodiversity<\/strong> is increasing globally, at present, \u201cwe still know <strong>surprisingly little<\/strong> about whether restoration reduces disease risks \u2013 or, in some cases, could unintentionally increase them temporarily,\u201d <strong>Adam Fell<\/strong>, professor at Stirling and co-author of the study published in Nature Sustainability, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stir.ac.uk\/news\/2026\/january-2026-news\/changing-land-use-can-increase-threat-of-animaltohuman-disease-spread-stirling-study-reveals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To shed light on these dynamics, the authors gathered <strong>evidence from previous studies<\/strong> supported by the European Commission through the <a href=\"https:\/\/eklipse.eu\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EKLIPSE<\/a> Biodiversity and Pandemics initiative launched in 2016.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe <strong>COVID-19<\/strong> pandemic has spotlighted the growing threat of zoonotic diseases, often exacerbated by land-use changes such as deforestation and habitat fragmentation,\u201d the study explains. \u201cWe conducted a <strong>systematic literature review<\/strong> (2000\u20132024) to assess how different types of land-use change affect zoonotic disease transmission, summarizing key findings and trends in geographic focus on the <strong>vectors\/hosts\/reservoirs and pathogens<\/strong> studied, in addition to identifying research gaps. The work, supported by the European <strong>Horizon<\/strong> program as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/restoreid.europamedia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RESTOREID<\/a> (Restoring Ecosystems to Stop the Threat of Re-Emerging Infectious Disease) project, has made it possible to combine research, case studies, and reports for use by policy makers. The authors then <strong>mapped these investigations<\/strong> by analyzing patterns and diseases in different regions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur analysis,\u201d they explain, \u201cshows that land-use changes such as deforestation and urbanization often increase transmission risks, particularly for diseases transmitted by<strong> mosquitos and rodents<\/strong>, while some restoration strategies (for example, reforestation and wetland conservation) can reduce these risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Eb8iBEKrzX\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-health-microbiomes-research\/\">Microorganisms are the common thread between soil and human health<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Microorganisms are the common thread between soil and human health&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-health-microbiomes-research\/embed\/#?secret=dPosv4jtPf#?secret=Eb8iBEKrzX\" data-secret=\"Eb8iBEKrzX\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The importance of an updated map<\/h5>\n<p>According to scientists, the results of the study confirm the validity of the so-called One Health approach, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/m\/item\/one-health-definitions-and-principles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defined<\/a> by the WHO as an integrated strategy that aims to simultaneously guarantee and optimize the <strong>health of people, animals, and ecosystems<\/strong>. In this sense, it demonstrates the importance of protecting biodiversity as a tool for combating future pandemics. However, the survey also highlighted how the results of these restoration actions can vary greatly, being influenced by the type of disease but also by <strong>different environmental contexts<\/strong>. This is an aspect that research has often failed to take into account adequately.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe literature remains <strong>geographically biased<\/strong>, with most studies concentrated in wealthier regions despite higher disease burdens in low-income areas,\u201d the study explains.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a result, the survey points out, some areas, such as much of <strong>Africa<\/strong>, <strong>Southeast Asia<\/strong>, and <strong>Latin America<\/strong>, where land use change and disease risk are both high, have not yet been studied in depth. For this reason, the researchers have identified 50 priority locations around the world for further research.
