The degree of habitat disturbance, the authors explained, affects microbial profiles<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>The biodiversity of <strong>microorganisms<\/strong> in <strong>Denmark<\/strong> soil is now fully represented in a national atlas. This is the result of extensive research conducted by a group of scientists led by <strong>Aalborg University<\/strong>, with the contribution of the <strong>University of Vienna<\/strong>, and described in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-09794-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in the journal Nature.<\/p>\n<p>The study focused on over 10,000 soil samples collected across the country, which made it possible <strong>to map<\/strong> the different Danish environmental microbiomes \u201cwith unprecedented spatial resolution and functional depth,\u201d the authors <a href=\"https:\/\/cemess.univie.ac.at\/news-detail\/microflora-danica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explain<\/a> in a news release. The researchers also highlighted the key role of nitrifying microbes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/wetlands-biodiversity-nitrogen-removal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nitrogen cycle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"BYROjV91Sf\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sustainable-agriculture-denmark-biochar\/\">Denmark bets on biochar for sustainable agriculture<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Denmark bets on biochar for sustainable agriculture&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sustainable-agriculture-denmark-biochar\/embed\/#?secret=tbYjGIOq6U#?secret=BYROjV91Sf\" data-secret=\"BYROjV91Sf\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Intensive agriculture alters microbial profiles<\/h5>\n<p>Launched in 2019, the study called \u201cMicroflora Danica\u201d is based on <strong>10,683<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metagenomics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gene sequences of microorganisms<\/a> and additional rRNA datasets and links the sequences to different habitats. \u201cMoreover,\u201d the research states, \u201cthe dataset incorporates <strong>14.9\u2009million bacterial<\/strong> (median 4,528\u2009bp) and <strong>13.4\u2009million eukaryotic<\/strong> rRNA operon <strong>sequences<\/strong> (median, 4,035\u2009bp), as well as 6.4 million nearly full-length bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences (median 1,355\u2009bp).\u201d These data, in particular, \u201coriginate from a subset of samples (450 and 412, respectively) reflecting sample diversity while maintaining geographical coverage of the wider dataset.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The study, the authors note, highlighted above all how the <strong>degree of habitat disturbance<\/strong> associated with <strong>intensive agriculture<\/strong> affects microbial profiles.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Natural habitats, in fact, retain <strong>greater overall diversity<\/strong>. Disturbed habitats, on the other hand, show high diversity at the local level but are more homogeneous at the national level. \u201cThis underlines the role of natural systems in maintaining total species (gamma) diversity and emphasizes the need for national baselines for <strong>tracking microbial responses<\/strong> to land-use and climate change,\u201d the study explains.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"WAAb69SPHw\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nitrogen-ecosystems-grasslands-agriculture\/\">Study reveals how much nitrogen grasslands can tolerate<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Study reveals how much nitrogen grasslands can tolerate&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nitrogen-ecosystems-grasslands-agriculture\/embed\/#?secret=2vhMi9kcSl#?secret=WAAb69SPHw\" data-secret=\"WAAb69SPHw\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The importance of nitrifiers<\/h5>\n<p>In analyzing the phenomenon, researchers focused on so-called <strong>nitrifiers<\/strong>, a group of microbes that impact climate regulation and water quality, two aspects linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/nitrogen-emissions-ozone-layer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nitrogen emissions<\/a> into the atmosphere and its distribution in waterways through the phenomenon of soil <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leaching_(chemistry)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaching<\/a>. \u201cWe identify several lineages encoding nitrifier key genes and reveal the effects of land disturbance on the abundance of well-studied, as well as uncharacterized, nitrifier groups, with potential implications for N2O emissions,\u201d the scientists explain.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In practice, the nitrifiers in soil microbiomes determine <strong>how long<\/strong> the reactive nitrogen in <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/fertilizer-eu-nitrogen-targets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fertilizers<\/a> remains <strong>available to plants<\/strong>. In particular, the research results show that microorganisms are the main drivers of biogeochemical processes and are therefore sensitive to land use.
