But climate pressure is increasing, and in the coming years the situation could worsen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"203\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"205\" data-end=\"660\">Climate change \u201cwill massively impact\u201d the functioning of <strong>peatlands<\/strong> across Europe, sparing only those located in the coldest and wettest areas. This is stated by a study from <strong>Wageningen University<\/strong> in the Netherlands, conducted within the WaterLANDS project, a programme led by University College Dublin that brings together 32 organizations from the research, industry, public institutions and non-profit sectors across 14 European countries.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"662\" data-end=\"1020\">The research analysed the distribution of these particular ecosystems by mapping their probability of survival under future scenarios. Conservation of these ecosystems is vital in <strong>preventing the return<\/strong> of massive amounts of carbon to the atmosphere,&#8221; says the <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ae2142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study\u00a0<\/a>published in the journal <em data-start=\"1328\" data-end=\"1360\">Environmental Research Letters<\/em>. &#8220;With climate boundaries of ecosystems shifting, choosing to restore wisely has never been more important&#8221;. Characterised by a distinctive <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/peatlands-project-bohemian-forest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biodiversity<\/a>, peatlands have long attracted the attention of scientists for their role in climate mitigation, as they are particularly suited to <strong>carbon storage<\/strong>, even though the effectiveness of this process <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/peatlands-congo-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can vary<\/a>\u00a0considerably across different regions of the planet.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1931\" data-end=\"2312\">Over the centuries, however, peat extraction and agricultural conversion <strong>have progressively reduced the extent of these environments<\/strong>. This phenomenon is demonstrated by the comparison between the historical and current spatial distribution of peatlands carried out by researchers using soil as an archive.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"vnzep58L2p\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/peatlands-climate-carbon\/\">In peatlands, climate change supports the degradation of organic carbon<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;In peatlands, climate change supports the degradation of organic carbon&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/peatlands-climate-carbon\/embed\/#?secret=ACcHjfZ7Gz#?secret=vnzep58L2p\" data-secret=\"vnzep58L2p\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5 data-start=\"2314\" data-end=\"2772\"><strong data-start=\"2314\" data-end=\"2364\">93% of European peatlands no longer have functioning peatland ecosystems<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p data-start=\"2314\" data-end=\"2772\">&#8220;We set out to assess how climate boundaries of peatlands in Europe may shift with climate by (1) deriving relationships between peatland distributions and climate variables and (2) using these relationships to project peatland distributions into the future,&#8221; the authors explain. Today, they add, &#8220;We estimate that <strong>93% of European peat soils<\/strong> do not longer have functioning peatland ecosystems&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2774\" data-end=\"2919\">The study, the researchers explain,<strong> can contribute to restoration efforts<\/strong> which, they argue, should now be developed on a large scale.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2921\" data-end=\"3307\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">After in the past, as a <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2025-12-climate-threatens-europe-peatlands.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> points out, these efforts \u201chave often been too localized or fragmented to make a significant difference to the re-establishment of ecosystems and species.&#8221; But what might peatlands look like in the future in the absence of regeneration initiatives? Attribution 4.0 International CC BY 4.0 Deed<\/p><\/div>\n<h5><strong>For the remaining 7%, climate pressure is increasing<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The researchers, in fact, mapped the climatic conditions characterizing the \u201csurviving\u201d areas and projected them into the future considering <strong>two different scenarios<\/strong>: the first assumes an evolution of average temperatures in line with the Paris Agreement in a low-emission world (about +1.5 \u00b0C by 2100 compared to pre-industrial levels); the second, on the other hand, envisions a strong increase already in the coming decades (+3 \u00b0C by 2050).<\/p>\n<p>Most of these ecosystems, they explain, will have to face increasing pressure. &#8221; The climate conditions for the remaining 7% of peatlands may remain best in <strong>Northern Scandinavia<\/strong>, the Western islands, and higher elevations within the European mainland,&#8221; the study explains.
