Meat and soy top the list in terms of impact, ahead of cocoa, palm oil, and coffee<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>Demand for beef meat continues to be the main contributor to <strong>deforestation<\/strong> in the <strong>Amazon <\/strong>region, ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/soya-moratorium-amazon-destruction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soy<\/a> cultivation. This is revealed in the latest <strong>WWF<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/wwfint.awsassets.panda.org\/downloads\/technical-brief--amazon-footprint-report--en-.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> released in recent weeks and produced in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI).<\/p>\n<p>In the study, researchers used <strong>satellite images<\/strong> of land use in the area, combining them with data on agricultural production and trade flows. Deforestation is mainly driven by the <strong>internal markets<\/strong> of countries in the region, although the role of global consumers remains significant.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"oqmCpnH4F9\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-soy-corporation-brazil\/\">Corporate commitments alone can&#8217;t stop soy-led deforestation<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Corporate commitments alone can&#8217;t stop soy-led deforestation&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-soy-corporation-brazil\/embed\/#?secret=jbNhtY1CAG#?secret=oqmCpnH4F9\" data-secret=\"oqmCpnH4F9\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Amazon has lost 8.6 million hectares in 5 years<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Crop commodities, <strong>beef<\/strong> production, and \u2013 to a lesser extent \u2013 timber plantations are associated with 8.6 million hectares of deforestation in the Amazon region between 2018 and 2022. This accounts for <strong>36% of the total global deforestation<\/strong> during the same period,\u201c the report notes. \u201dCattle-linked deforestation is the main direct driver, resulting from pasture expansion, and accounts for 78% (6.7 million hectares) of the total commodity-attributed deforestation in this period.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To date, moreover, \u201c<strong>59% of the world\u2019s total cattle deforestation<\/strong> footprint and 33% of the world\u2019s soy deforestation footprint originated from the Amazon region.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In Brazil, in particular, production systems are largely linked to the Amazon region, impacting a total of <strong>6.5 million hectares<\/strong>. Over 20% of global deforestation induced by market demand from countries such as Portugal, Switzerland, Spain, and South Korea, the researchers explain, originated in this same area.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"0mMywssNY8\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-carbon-balance-deficit\/\">Carbon balance in Amazon rainforest shows 370 million tons deficit in a decade<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Carbon balance in Amazon rainforest shows 370 million tons deficit in a decade&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-carbon-balance-deficit\/embed\/#?secret=sHgOU8DDYE#?secret=0mMywssNY8\" data-secret=\"0mMywssNY8\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Meat, soy, and&#8230; coffee<\/h5>\n<p>Currently, \u201cIt is known that expansion of pasture for meat production is an important factor behind deforestation especially in Brazil, but the picture is significantly more complex than that,\u201d explained <strong>Martin Persson<\/strong>, professor at Chalmers&#8217; Division of Physical Resource Theory, in a statement. \u201cThe increased production and demand of crops such as soy, palm oil, cocoa and coffee is an important driver in other areas, especially <strong>Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The professor also notes the particular case of <strong>Sweden<\/strong>, where the demand for another product, <strong>coffee<\/strong>, has the greatest impact on deforestation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the latest surveys, starting in 2022, this product will surpass even beef in the ranking of commodities that impact deforestation. That year, coffee consumption in Sweden will contribute to the <strong>destruction of 331 hectares of Amazon rainforest<\/strong>, an area corresponding to approximately 463 soccer fields. Beef accounts for 236 hectares. In this scenario, the study concludes, it is essential to continue investing in data provision and transparency. Improving information gathering, in particular, is crucial for developing new insights and improving continuous monitoring processes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cExisting gaps in knowledge about where crops are grown and where trade flows originate require enhanced levels of production and <strong>supply chain disclosure<\/strong>,\u201d the study points out.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This will make it possible to carry out better risk assessments, target conservation practices at areas at risk, prevent the displacement of deforestation activities to neighboring landscapes, and ultimately promote accountability among actors operating inside and outside the Amazon region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest WWF report identifies the main factors behind the ongoing phenomenon in the Amazon.
