This is why synergies between the two sectors must be promoted through appropriate policies and investments. This is the message launched by the latest <strong>FAO<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.fao.org\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/ca023032-ebd7-490a-b052-a38bec6c8d38\/content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> that was released at the 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/cop30.br\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations Climate Change Conference<\/a> (<strong>COP30<\/strong>) in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForests and trees are often seen as competing with <strong>farming<\/strong> for <strong>land<\/strong>, or being peripheral to agriculture, but conserving and restoring forests is in fact crucial to boosting agricultural productivity,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/newsroom\/detail\/cop30--forests-drive-agricultural-success--not-conflict--report-shows\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> FAO Forestry Director <strong>Zhimin Wu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"LqUBwaAEXR\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/natural-restored-forests-co2\/\">Forests restored by nature can sequester 23 billion tonnes of CO2<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Forests restored by nature can sequester 23 billion tonnes of CO2&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/natural-restored-forests-co2\/embed\/#?secret=XXPOgMD1j2#?secret=LqUBwaAEXR\" data-secret=\"LqUBwaAEXR\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The benefits of forests<\/h5>\n<p>Published jointly by the Stockholm Environment Institute, Conservation International and The Nature Conservancy, the FAO report emphasizes how deforestation has <strong>immediate and measurable effects<\/strong> on <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/crisis-forests-climate-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">climate<\/a> and agriculture. In addition to mitigating temperatures, these ecosystems sustain rainfall and regulate the water cycle, directly supporting crop productivity, stabilizing local climates, and improving the health, safety, and livelihoods of rural communities.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA recent study shows that agricultural areas in <strong>155 countries<\/strong> rely on forests in other countries for up to <strong>40 percent of annual precipitation<\/strong>,\u201d the report points out.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is particulary true for <strong>Africa<\/strong>, where, according to the survey, \u201cAlmost 50 percent of precipitation derives from transpiration worldwide.\u201d In the continent, moreover, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/deforestation-congo-basin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Congo rainforest<\/a>, recycles over 40 percent of its moisture locally and contributes over 10 percent of precipitation to remote African agricultural areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41449\" style=\"width: 1224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41449\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41449\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/precipitazioni-africa.jpg\" alt=\"Origine delle precipitazioni medie annuali nei principali bacini idrografici africani, media calcolata sul periodo 1981-2016. Conversely, rising temperatures due to deforestation can affect human health. In particular, it is estimated that between 2001 and 2020, deforestation in the tropics contributed to \u201caround<strong> 28\u2009000 additional heat-related deaths<\/strong> annually, suggesting that forest loss is both an environmental issue and a potential public health threat.\u201d The benefits for agriculture are also significant.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cForests and trees deliver other vital <strong>ecosystem services<\/strong> \u2013 such as pollination, biological pest control, nutrient cycling, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/innovation-technology\/ai-better-erosion-prediction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">erosion<\/a> control, fodder, <strong>mulch<\/strong>, and climate regulation \u2013 that enhance crop yields and sustain ecosystem health,\u201d writes the FAO.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Therefore approaches that integrate forests and trees into agricultural systems as as shelterbelts, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/riparian-buffer-strips-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">riparian buffers<\/a> and forest patches are crucial. However, concrete initiatives and economic incentives are needed to achieve these goals.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPolicy and incentives must bridge sectors, recognizing <strong>sustainable forest management<\/strong> as a multisectoral strategy for <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/wef-food-security-soil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food security<\/a>, public health and climate resilience,\u201d FAO explains.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, farmers, local and indigenous communities must be empowered by involving them in the design of shared solutions and improving monitoring activities. In this sense, \u201cForest conservation, restoration and sustainable use are sound investments in climate resilient agriculture, rural livelihoods, and global food and water security,\u201d the report concludes. \u201cBy promoting forest\u2013 agriculture synergies, societies can work towards a more productive, sustainable and equitable
