This is the goal of the two-day course <a href=\"https:\/\/formazionecontinua.unicatt.it\/formazione-sustainable-agrifood-systems-and-plastic-pollution-a-one-health-vision-a125pc0192-01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cSustainable Agrifood Systems and Plastic Pollution: A One Health Vision\u201d<\/a> scheduled for November 20-21 at the Carpegna Palace Hotel in <strong>Rome<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Targeted at doctoral students and young researchers, the initiative\u2014organized by <strong>Universit\u00e0 Cattolica del Sacro Cuore<\/strong> \u2014aims to provide the tools \u201cto critically appraise evidence, quantify risks, and design monitoring and mitigation strategies across agrifood chains.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/iscrizionionline.unicatt.it\/s\/eventsub?subId=a10dY000000vow9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Registration <\/a>is open until November 16.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"0zASICO81a\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/microplastics-fungi-soil-drought\/\">Microplastics affect soil fungi according to drought conditions<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Microplastics affect soil fungi according to drought conditions&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/microplastics-fungi-soil-drought\/embed\/#?secret=58qHlBE1l6#?secret=0zASICO81a\" data-secret=\"0zASICO81a\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A focus on microplastics, soil and health<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cThis winter school was partly conceived as an expression of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agrifoodplast.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agrifoodplast<\/a>, the international conference on microplastics in agri-food systems launched in 2023, whose third edition will soon be announced,\u201d explains <strong>Edoardo Puglisi<\/strong>, Full Professor of Agricultural Microbiology at the Catholic University and scientific director of the course. By tackling key topics such as plastic pollution, soil and crop contamination, food safety risks, <strong>interactions with soil microbiota<\/strong> and invertebrates, and much more, the initiative \u2014 see the full program <a href=\"https:\/\/formazionecontinua.unicatt.it\/formazione-sustainable-agrifood-systems-and-plastic-pollution-a-one-health-vision-a125pc0192-01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> \u2014 offers participants the chance to engage directly with leading international experts while building skills in data interpretation, exposure analysis, and risk assessment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea,\u201d says professor Puglisi, who is also coordinator of a research group in agricultural and environmental microbiology, &#8220;is to bring together the world&#8217;s leading experts in research on microplastics in the environment to illustrate to participants the state of the art in research in terms of <strong>impact on soil<\/strong>, influence on ecosystem functions, sustainability of use, and even toxicological and ecotoxicological implications from a One Health perspective (the integrated approach which, according to the WHO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/m\/item\/one-health-definitions-and-principles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">definition<\/a>, identifies the balance between human, animal and ecosystem health, ed.).&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"7f33Dk5SwX\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/trees-health-microplastics-forests\/\">Forests keep us from breathing in microplastics<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Forests keep us from breathing in microplastics&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/trees-health-microplastics-forests\/embed\/#?secret=zYJ55LO61A#?secret=7f33Dk5SwX\" data-secret=\"7f33Dk5SwX\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5 data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"33\">An impressive lineup of experts<\/h5>\n<p data-start=\"35\" data-end=\"502\">The course offers a program centered on advanced concepts and policy perspectives, supported by case studies that connect terrestrial and marine environments, explore the global policy landscape surrounding plastic use in agriculture, and examine the wider impacts of this phenomenon. According to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eionet.europa.eu\/etcs\/etc-he\/products\/etc-he-products\/etc-he-reports\/etc-he-report-2024-15-microplastic-releases-in-the-european-union\/@@download\/file\/ETC-HE%20Report%202024-15_task3141Report_v4.10_FINAL_for%20publication%2031-01-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from the European Environment Information and Observation Network (<strong>Eionet<\/strong>) of the <strong>EU Environment Agency<\/strong>, which examined various sources such as tire wear, plastic pellets, and paints, the spread of microplastics increased by an estimated <strong>7.5\u20138.6%<\/strong> between 2016 and 2022. Figures like these, the authors warn, make it \u201cunlikely\u201d that the EU will meet its goal of cutting microplastic releases into the environment by 30% by the end of this decade.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"599\" data-end=\"904\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">It\u2019s a serious problem \u2014 but also, as Professor Puglisi points out, \u201ca <strong>complex issue<\/strong> on which researchers have reached a <strong>solid consensus<\/strong> on both the evidence and the urgent need for action.\u201d Many of the winter school&#8217;s speakers, morever, are members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ikhapp.org\/scientist-about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scientists\u2019 Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"enony41hOh\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/france-soils-contaminated-microplastics\/\">Three quarters of soils in France contaminated with microplastics<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Three quarters of soils in France contaminated with microplastics&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/france-soils-contaminated-microplastics\/embed\/#?secret=JlCuKT0MBT#?secret=enony41hOh\" data-secret=\"enony41hOh\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>\u201cResearch offers new solutions\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>The Coalition, professor Puglisi says, was formed in 2022 to contribute to the achievement of an international treaty to stop plastic pollution with the support of the UN Environment Assembly (<strong>UNEA<\/strong>). Negotiations on this goal are still ongoing.
