Regional agricultural systems are a decisive factor<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>The 20% cut in <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/metal-fertilisers-global-soils\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chemical fertilizer<\/a> use recommended by the European Union would not be enough to achieve the Green Deal&#8217;s goal of <strong>halving nutrient losses by 2030<\/strong>. This is claimed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43016-025-01210-2#Sec5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by the <strong>Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research<\/strong> (UFZ) in Leipzig published in the journal Nature Food. According to the authors, the loss of nitrogen\u2014which is an essential element for the soil, but whose <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/diversified-rotation-nitrogen-crops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">excessive diffusion<\/a> causes environmental damage\u2014is still too high in Europe, despite the decrease recorded in the 21st century following stricter regulations.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"BRWK2BtUnk\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/study-emissions-nitrogen-fertilizers\/\">A new project will monitor global nitrogen emissions from fertilizers<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;A new project will monitor global nitrogen emissions from fertilizers&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/study-emissions-nitrogen-fertilizers\/embed\/#?secret=vbMx0XXPrT#?secret=BRWK2BtUnk\" data-secret=\"BRWK2BtUnk\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The impact of fertilizers varies from region to region<\/h5>\n<p>To better understand the current scenario, German researchers analyzed <strong>the annual nitrogen surplus in Europe<\/strong> between 1850 and 2019. In this way they showed how the impact of regulation varies greatly depending on the characteristics of the local agricultural system. This is an aspect that previous studies do not seem to have adequately considered. \u201cPrevious studies have assessed the feasibility of these targets by estimating N balances and potential N loss reductions under future scenarios,\u201d the research states. \u201cWhile insightful, <strong>they often focus on the aggregated EU level<\/strong> and do not fully account for regional variability.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The fact, the authors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufz.de\/index.php?en=36336&amp;webc_pm=32\/2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a>, is that elements such as technology, <strong>land use<\/strong>, and different management practices <strong>prove to be crucial aspects<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For this reason, the authors argue, reducing fertilizers can have a significant positive impact \u201cin countries like Germany, France and Poland, where it is heavily relied upon for <strong>agricultural production<\/strong>.\u201d In contrast, \u201careas with <strong>high livestock density<\/strong>, such as Wales and the Netherlands, may benefit more from reducing manure use.\u201d How, then, can the effectiveness of the EU strategy be assessed considering these variables?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40526\" style=\"width: 2510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40526\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40526\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/europa-azoto-categorie.jpg\" alt=\"L'eccedenza di azoto in Europa, suddivisa in quattro categorie. European countries were then divided into four categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cManure,\u201d typical of countries with high livestock density such as the <strong>Netherlands and Denmark<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSynthetic fertilizers,\u201d which includes those in Central Europe such as <strong>Germany and France<\/strong>, where more mineral fertilizer is used than animal manure;<\/li>\n<li>\u201cModerate use of manure and synthetic fertilizers,\u201d typical of many <strong>Eastern European and Mediterranean countries<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>\u201cNatural landscapes,\u201d a category that includes Northern European countries such as <strong>Norway, Sweden, and Finland<\/strong>, where fewer inputs\u2014mineral or animal\u2014are used than the continental average.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The researchers then developed future scenarios for the four regional categories based on nitrogen surpluses for the period 2015-2019. In other words, in the best-case scenario, the result achieved would be less than a third of the target (50% less dispersion than current levels calculated on average values for the period 2015-19).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>All things considered, explains <strong>Andreas Musolff<\/strong>, hydrogeologist at the UFZ and co-author of the research, only \u201cfive countries \u2013 <strong>Sweden, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Czech Republic<\/strong> \u2013 would halve their nitrogen surplus in this scenario.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, the study argues that the EU target could not be achieved even by implementing the <strong>most ambitious effort suggested by the FAO<\/strong>, which envisages a 43% reduction in synthetic fertilizers and a 4% reduction in animal manure, combined with modern technologies and management measures. Achieving that goal, the study concludes, <strong>would reduce the nitrogen surplus by 30-45%<\/strong>.
