In other words, a more accurate assessment of the effects of climate change on the area\u2019s only form of vegetation. This is the claim of researchers from the <strong>Queensland University of Technology (QUT)<\/strong> in Brisbane, Australia, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-025-11535-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in the journal Scientific Reports. The authors described the use of a new system for monitoring and classifying plant species. These species, he added, \u201cdrive nutrient cycles and underpin Antarctica\u2019s ecosystems, yet they are the first to suffer from warming, extreme weather and human trampling.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"592\" data-end=\"735\">For this reason, in short, \u201cKeeping track of their health is vital but<strong> extremely difficult<\/strong> in subzero field conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"737\" data-end=\"1198\">Observation activity typically makes use of drones, but there are some limitations. \u201cDetecting moss and lichen using conventional red, green, blue (RGB) and multispectral sensors remains challenging,\u201d the research explains. Specifically, the system records <strong>hundreds of shades for each pixel<\/strong>, combining them with a satellite navigation mechanism to accurately assign each image fragment to its exact location. Other high-resolution RGB photos were also added.<\/p>\n<p>The data was used to train machine learning models which, according to the scientists, outperformed traditional metrics. \u201cThis new integrated system <strong>surpasses conventional digital images<\/strong> (red-green-blue or RGB) and also the satellite-based Normalised Different Vegetation Index (NDVI) that is being used to assess vegetation health and density,\u201d Sandino points out. The results, the study says, \u201cshow that common indices are inadequate for moss and lichen detection, while novel spectral indices are more effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"4P7xKoOPtm\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ai-plants-mutant-bacteria\/\">AI helps plants track down mutant bacteria<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;AI helps plants track down mutant bacteria&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ai-plants-mutant-bacteria\/embed\/#?secret=nSc2TnS9Va#?secret=4P7xKoOPtm\" data-secret=\"4P7xKoOPtm\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>An accuracy rate of 99%<\/h5>\n<p>In total, the researchers compared 12 different AI models for classifying vegetation: the best solutions achieved <strong>an accuracy rate of around 99%<\/strong>. \u201cFull models achieved high performance, with CatBoost and UNet reaching 98.3% and 99.7% weighted average accuracy, respectively,\u201d the study explains. \u201cLight models using eight key wavelengths performed well, with CatBoost at 95.5% and UNet at 99.8%, demonstrating suitability for preliminary monitoring of moss health and lichen.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Finally, the tests carried out by the researchers showed that flights at higher altitudes, between 30 and 70 meters, allow <strong>larger areas to be mapped<\/strong> to obtain regional overviews, while lower altitudes capture more precise details.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In short, the study confirmed the validity of the monitoring method for both small plots and larger areas.
