The program was launched following the outcomes of the <strong>UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 15)<\/strong> held in Montreal in 2022, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/un-biodiversity-conference-cop-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">established<\/a> \u201cnew set of goals to guide global action through 2030 to halt and reverse nature loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"JSARK08Haj\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/biodiversity-regeneration-ecosystems-brazil\/\">When restoring ecosystems, biodiversity is the key<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;When restoring ecosystems, biodiversity is the key&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/biodiversity-regeneration-ecosystems-brazil\/embed\/#?secret=8HjA2ZkpTr#?secret=JSARK08Haj\" data-secret=\"JSARK08Haj\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5><strong>A new approach<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>GLOSOB, its promoters explain, seeks to overcome the limitations of existing platforms, which suffer from a lack of standardized monitoring protocols and concrete strategies to integrate soil biodiversity into national policies. \u201cCurrent initiatives often operate as a bottom-up network, and coordinate researchers and link ongoing projects to standardize and harmonize soil biodiversity measurements across various ecosystems,\u201d says an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41559-025-02754-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> published in <em>Nature Ecology &amp; Evolution<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In contrast, GLOSOB adopts a <strong>top-down approach<\/strong>, identifying <strong>soil biodiversity hotspots<\/strong> and key monitoring areas. To date, the <strong>Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)<\/strong>\u2014the key international treaty on the subject adopted in 1992\u2014recognizes only two indicators: the agrobiodiversity index and changes in organic carbon stocks.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHowever, these represent only a limited assessment, and the<strong> full complexity of soil<\/strong> <strong>biodiversity<\/strong> and metabolic interactions that regulate biogeochemical cycles and other ecosystem functions are not being considered,\u201d the article notes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As an alternative, GLOSOB proposes a <strong>three-tiered system<\/strong> to measure a wider range of EBVs, including, for example, the study of soil organisms\u2014such as <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/innovation-technology\/japan-study-nematodes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nematodes<\/a>, arthropods, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/bacteria-root-rice-cultivation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bacteria<\/a>, and<strong> fungi<\/strong>\u2014and their ecological functions. These include assessing national capacities, identifying monitoring sites (including agricultural, natural, and urban soils), and allocating resources.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The final phase will involve \u201c<strong>interpretation of GLOSOB soil biodiversity data<\/strong> to provide reports and progress to parties, and give policymakers the information needed to promote sustainable practices.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The project, the authors conclude, \u201crepresents a critical step in addressing global challenges related to soil biodiversity and ecosystem health.\u201d It also aims to <strong>harmonize diverse scientific contributions<\/strong>.
