In contrast, following heavy rains higher yields are expected in Italy, Greece and the Iberian Peninsula<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>Ecosystems and agriculture on the European Continent are reckoning with <strong>drought<\/strong>. This is stated in the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/op.europa.eu\/en\/publication-detail\/-\/publication\/188cbe48-4dbd-11f0-a9d0-01aa75ed71a1\/language-en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by the <strong>Joint Research Center (JRC)<\/strong>. The study, which calls for rapid and coordinated action to reduce the risks and impacts of the phenomenon, is based on data from the <strong>Copernicus<\/strong> emergency management service or the <strong>European Drought Observatory (EDO)<\/strong>. The water scarcity conditions were triggered by the lack of rain between March and the end of May, and the impact of above-average temperatures. With consequences for vegetation growth and rivers.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"2BPNOCzAOL\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ultrasound-device-drought-plant\/\">Ultrasound device measures the impact of drought on plants<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Ultrasound device measures the impact of drought on plants&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ultrasound-device-drought-plant\/embed\/#?secret=3qPhh3iXEg#?secret=2BPNOCzAOL\" data-secret=\"2BPNOCzAOL\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Soil under stress<\/h5>\n<p>To identify areas affected by <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/central-asia-agricultural-drought\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agricultural drought<\/a>, or the <strong>soil moisture deficit<\/strong> that affects crop development, the authors used an index known as the <strong>Combined Drought Indicator (CDI)<\/strong> that is based on a combination of three quantities. These include the <strong>SPI<\/strong> or Standardized Precipitation Index, which measures how much rainfall is below (or above) normal, and the <strong>fAPAR<\/strong> or Anomaly of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation, which basically measures the health of vegetation by monitoring the fraction of solar energy assimilated by leaves.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Finally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/drought.emergency.copernicus.eu\/data\/factsheets\/factsheet_soilmoisture.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Soil Moisture Index Anomaly<\/strong><\/a> assesses \u201cthe deviations from <strong>normal conditions<\/strong> of root zone water content,\u201d the study explains.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Because of this, the indicator represents \u201ca direct measure of drought associated with the difficulty of plants in extracting water from the soil.\u201d At the end of May, the report continues, \u201cthe Index shows negative anomalies over large areas of the Euro-Mediterranean region, consistently with the precipitation deficit of the previous months.\u201d Some regions of <strong>north-central Europe<\/strong> and the <strong>Baltic<\/strong> \u201care under drier-than-usual conditions.\u201d In the eastern and southern parts of the Continent, it is also particularly affecting Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Turkey and southwestern Russia as a result of a prolonged period of low rainfall.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39949\" style=\"width: 1052px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39949\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39949\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/anomalia-umidita-suolo.jpg\" alt=\"La variazione geografica della Soil Moisture Index Anomaly. In July, the JRC <a href=\"https:\/\/joint-research-centre.ec.europa.eu\/jrc-news-and-updates\/escalating-drought-threatens-europes-ecosystems-and-agriculture-2025-06-23_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emphasizes<\/a>, there could also be <strong>disruptions in the availability<\/strong> of shipping in western Russia, southeastern Turkey, and islands in the central and eastern Mediterranean.
