That&#8217;s the conclusion of researchers at the <strong>University of Florida<\/strong>&#8216;s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences who used aerial imagery to determine the optimal amount of nitrogen fertilizer in sativa hemp plantations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve shown that farmers with access to aerial images using<strong> red and near infrared (NIR)<\/strong> detection can spot differences in plant health by their color when scanning their fields,\u201d <strong>Zack Brym<\/strong>, professor of agronomy and co-author of the <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.ashs.org\/view\/journals\/hortsci\/60\/3\/article-p353.xml?tab_body=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in the journal HortScience, said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ufl.edu\/2025\/05\/drones-ai-help-farmers-save-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> released by the same university. A crucial fact, he pointed out, that can determine the yield and quality of crops themselves.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"oIoxQepq9L\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/drones-soil-mapping-pollution\/\">Drones open a new frontier in soil mapping<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Drones open a new frontier in soil mapping&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/drones-soil-mapping-pollution\/embed\/#?secret=fELa0p3kww#?secret=oIoxQepq9L\" data-secret=\"oIoxQepq9L\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A balanced fertilizer supply for hemp<\/h5>\n<p>In the U.S., <strong>the cultivation and trade for industrial use<\/strong> of cannabis sativa &#8211; which is characterized by an extremely low concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol, the plant&#8217;s psychoactive constituent &#8211; was finally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/congressional-testimony\/hemp-production-and-2018-farm-bill-07252019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legalized <\/a>in 2018. Four years later, official statistics from the Department of Agriculture noted, their crops covered 500 hectares worth more than $200 million.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAlthough hemp has been successfully cultivated,\u201d the study notes, \u201c<strong>the current lack of hemp Nitrogen fertilizer recommendations<\/strong> can pose a challenge for profitable hemp production from underfertilization and environmental impacts from overfertilization.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the first case, the authors recall, the plant may suffer from chlorosis, or yellowing of the foliage, stunted growth and reduced yield. In the second, there is a risk of producing <strong>too much leaf material<\/strong> with little benefit to valuable flower generation. <strong>Excess nitrogen<\/strong>, moreover, can spread in the environment through <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leaching_(chemistry)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaching<\/a> with obvious <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/climate-change-nitrogen-contamination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">effects<\/a> on ecosystems.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"4UlH1amRkp\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nitrogen-ecosystems-grasslands-agriculture\/\">Study reveals how much nitrogen grasslands can tolerate<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Study reveals how much nitrogen grasslands can tolerate&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nitrogen-ecosystems-grasslands-agriculture\/embed\/#?secret=iZUpnUp9pV#?secret=4UlH1amRkp\" data-secret=\"4UlH1amRkp\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Drones capture plant growth and health<\/h5>\n<p>For three years, the study recalls, researchers grew a popular flowering hemp variety by applying <strong>six increasing doses of nitrogen fertilizer<\/strong>. Using drones equipped with multispectral cameras, they successively flew over the fields a month before harvest to capture images from above. These measured how green and healthy the plants were, highlighting different levels of growth based on different nitrogen rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe N application rate of 224 kg\u00b7ha\u22121 N resulted in significant increase in hemp biomass from 112 and 56 kg\u00b7ha\u22121,\u201d the study points out, \u201cwhereas significant increases in floral yield and canopy area were observed just at 112 and 56 kg\u00b7ha\u22121 N.\u201d Ultimately, the authors point out, \u201cthe study found that <strong>using a moderate amount of nitrogen<\/strong> &#8211; 112 to 168 kilograms per hectare &#8211; resulted in <strong>the healthiest plants and greatest flower yields<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"itmFj2xlX6\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/artificial-intelligence-evapotranspiration\/\">Artificial intelligence accurately measures soil evapotranspiration<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Artificial intelligence accurately measures soil evapotranspiration&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/artificial-intelligence-evapotranspiration\/embed\/#?secret=QTNChovusa#?secret=itmFj2xlX6\" data-secret=\"itmFj2xlX6\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Artificial Intelligence is decisive<\/h5>\n<p>The drone images revealed clear differences in the size and color of the plants, which corresponded to the amount of biomass harvested, thus providing an<strong> accurate view of their condition<\/strong> in the soil.
