These are the critical limits of an ecosystem beyond which even small changes in conditions can have disproportionate effects on <strong>the biodiversity and the functioning of those environments<\/strong>. This concept is analysed in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41559-025-02729-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in the journal Nature Ecology &amp; Evolution that examined the impact of <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/study-emissions-nitrogen-fertilizers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nitrogen fertilizers<\/a> in <strong>grasslands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The authors, in particular, measured for the first time, the amount of the element capable of causing plant species to lose their <strong>ability to coexist<\/strong>. A phenomenon that in turn causes a sharp decline in the variety of species &#8211; and the services they provide &#8211; making the ecosystems extremely vulnerable to climatic events.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"rUwXke0mzi\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/bacteria-grassland-soil-acidita\/\">Bacteria help predict soil acidity in grasslands<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Bacteria help predict soil acidity in grasslands&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/bacteria-grassland-soil-acidita\/embed\/#?secret=VmC4iyk8P5#?secret=rUwXke0mzi\" data-secret=\"rUwXke0mzi\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Grasslands are among the most endangered ecosystems<\/h5>\n<p>Grasslands, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inrae.fr\/en\/news\/identifying-ecological-thresholds-optimal-ecosystem-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explain<\/a> researchers from <strong>INRAE<\/strong>, the Institut national de la recherche agronomique, a French public agency that collaborated on the study, are home to a wide variety of plant species and provide numerous ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, support for pollinators and grazing for livestock (including <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/interview-cotrufo-grazing-soil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regenerative grazing<\/a>). However, they are also some of the most threatened ecosystems due to human activities, including land use change and intensive agricultural practices.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Among the soil stresses is the<strong> extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/innovation-technology\/artificial-intelligence-fertilizer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">use of fertilizers<\/a><\/strong>, which can cause a <strong>buildup<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/nitrogen-fertilizers-emissions-climate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nitrogen<\/a>, jeopardizing the resilience of the ecosystem and its actors.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To better understand the phenomenon, the researchers compiled data collected on <strong>150 temperate grasslands in Germany between 2008 and 2020<\/strong>. These environments, they explained, are particularly representative of Western European agricultural ecosystems and are managed with different levels of intensity.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"chgQoeK2OL\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/carbon-canada-survey-prairies\/\">New study will map carbon sequestration in Canadian prairies<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;New study will map carbon sequestration in Canadian prairies&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/carbon-canada-survey-prairies\/embed\/#?secret=G9uiL9CHjf#?secret=chgQoeK2OL\" data-secret=\"chgQoeK2OL\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>One hectare of soil can tolerate a maximum of 80 kg of nitrogen per year<\/h5>\n<p>To identify ecological thresholds, the researchers then analyzed a number of <strong>plant functional traits <\/strong>such as leaf size and growth rate that determine how species react to, interact with, and affect the environment. Fertilization, they explain, constitutes the <strong>first threshold:<\/strong> in fields treated with nitrogen products, in fact, biodiversity is reduced. Even if the ecosystem remains stable and productive.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The main problem occurs later. \u201cThe second threshold occurred when fertilization exceeded <strong>80\u2009kg\u2009of nitrogen per hectare per year<\/strong> or when grazing exceeded 500 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Livestock_grazing_comparison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">livestock units<\/a>\u2009days\u2009per hectare per year,\u201d the study states.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beyond these limits, the research continues, \u201cthe most intensively managed grasslands were functionally poor, highly unstable and <strong>vulnerable to extreme weather events<\/strong>.\u201d The identified ecological thresholds, the study concludes, \u201cmay provide targets for sustainable management and fertilization practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"hWdg0lMzdA\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/crop-diversification-carbon-nitrogen\/\">Crop diversification supports nitrogen sequestration (but not carbon)<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Crop diversification supports nitrogen sequestration (but not carbon)&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/crop-diversification-carbon-nitrogen\/embed\/#?secret=sAoZKkr5tG#?secret=hWdg0lMzdA\" data-secret=\"hWdg0lMzdA\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The challenge: preventing critical changes in ecosystems<\/h5>\n<p>The study, therefore, allowed for the first time to identify a threshold beyond which agricultural intensification <strong>no longer produces more crop plant biomass<\/strong>. While generating, by contrast, greater nutrient loss through <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leaching_(chemistry)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaching<\/a> due to increased water infiltration. As a result, crops become more vulnerable to climatic stresses such as <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/drought-heat-carbon-sequestration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drought<\/a>\u00a0in particular.<\/p>\n<p>The knowledge provided by the research can now help to better assess the ability of grasslands to sustain high plant diversity. And to intervene early at the first signs of declining ecosystem services. The proposed approach, the authors conclude, could also be applied to the <strong>management of other environmental problems<\/strong> &#8211; such as lake eutrophication, fish and forest resource management, or desertification &#8211; to prevent critical changes in ecosystems by anticipating their degradation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to researchers,
