The greater the human pressure, the lower the ability of the system to proliferate<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Human activity impacts the Planet by generating a phenomenon that is as worrisome as it is difficult to capture: the <strong>loss of plant biodiversity<\/strong>. A widespread problem that affects even those natural areas seemingly not directly subject to anthropogenic pressure. This is supported by a group of researchers from different academic institutions who, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-08814-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in Nature, introduced a new concept defined as <strong><em>dark diversity<\/em><\/strong>. That is, the set of species that could live in a given place but are absent despite being present in the surroundings and, above all, compatible with the local environment.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"BlC1ez5kme\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/woody-crops-biodiversity\/\">Perennial woody crops help preserve biodiversity<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Perennial woody crops help preserve biodiversity&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/woody-crops-biodiversity\/embed\/#?secret=nIrtuP1gvR#?secret=BlC1ez5kme\" data-secret=\"BlC1ez5kme\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Understanding the completeness of a system<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is that over time, as we lose species due to human impact, we don&#8217;t see the number of species that are lost because we only see what we can perceive,\u201d <strong>Viktoria Wagner<\/strong>, a University of Alberta professor and co-author of the research, explained in a <a href=\"https:\/\/educationnewscanada.com\/article\/education\/level\/university\/1\/1141083\/uncovering-silent-species-losses-key-for-conservation-efforts-study.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, pointing out that this approach allows for a more complete picture of the problem by highlighting not so much the presence of species in a certain place as their <strong>absence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a <strong>silent loss<\/strong> of biodiversity happening that might have gone unnoticed using the traditional tools,\u201d Wagner explains. \u201cThe concept of dark diversity is a way for us to understand <strong>what species could have been there<\/strong> but are currently lacking.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In short, dark diversity reveals how \u201ccomplete\u201d an ecosystem is in relation to its natural potential. Using this new approach, then, the researchers were able to develop a new metric called \u201c<strong>community completeness<\/strong>\u201d that measures the percentage of potentially present species that were actually detected at a given site. A completeness of 25 percent, to be clear, is proper of an ecosystem that hosts only a quarter of the species that, under normal circumstances, would be able to inhabit it.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"o9cDyFEFS1\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/canopy-soils-biodiversity-trees\/\">In canopy soils there is an undiscovered biodiversity<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;In canopy soils there is an undiscovered biodiversity&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/canopy-soils-biodiversity-trees\/embed\/#?secret=0MtDpYpjky#?secret=o9cDyFEFS1\" data-secret=\"o9cDyFEFS1\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Biodiversity is negatively correlated with surrounding human pressure<\/h5>\n<p>Carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/macroecology.ut.ee\/en\/darkdivnet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DarkDivNet<\/a>, a global network formed to explore the hidden biodiversity of plant communities, the study has involved <strong>5,415 sites to date located in 119 regions<\/strong> in every continent, \u201cTo estimate community completeness, we compared the number of recorded species with the dark diversity,\u201d the authors explain. Moreover, they add:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn the sampled regions with a minimal human footprint index, <strong>an average of 35% of suitable plant species were present<\/strong> <strong>locally<\/strong>, compared with<strong> less than 20%<\/strong> in highly affected regions.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Biodiversity, the authors explain in short, \u201cis globally negatively related to <strong>the level of anthropogenic activity<\/strong> in the surrounding region.\u201d Moreovtr, the study also points out that many potentially present species have now disappeared or, at any rate, can no longer establish themselves in still intact or semi-natural environments. \u201cAs well as causing species losses in directly affected locations,\u201d the research states, in fact, \u201chuman influence might also reduce biodiversity in relatively unmodified vegetation if far-reaching anthropogenic effects trigger local extinctions and hinder recolonization.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"2PHvKK4QNL\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/biodiversity-regeneration-ecosystems-brazil\/\">When restoring ecosystems, biodiversity is the key<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;When restoring ecosystems, biodiversity is the key&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/biodiversity-regeneration-ecosystems-brazil\/embed\/#?secret=XMqb0W1dE8#?secret=2PHvKK4QNL\" data-secret=\"2PHvKK4QNL\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Opportunities for restoration<\/h5>\n<p>On May 22, the world celebrates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/biological-diversity-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biodiversity Day<\/a>, an occasion to think about the phenomenon of its progressive loss, which, according to experts, poses <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/economics-and-finance\/climate-biodiversity-economy-in-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no less serious threat<\/a> than the climate crisis. The study, in this sense, makes an important contribution to efforts to combat the problem by introducing a new concept that enables the <strong>design of both targeted restoration interventions and conservation strategies<\/strong> on a larger scale.<\/p>\n<p>The concept of dark biodiversity \u201cBesides having the potential to uncover overlooked threats to biodiversity, dark diversity also provides guidance for nature conservation,\u201d the research concludes. \u201cSpecies in the dark diversity remain regionally present, and their local populations <strong>might be restored<\/strong> through measures that improve connectivity between natural vegetation fragments and reduce threats to population persistence.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An international study introduces the concept of dark biodiversity, which helps to understand the completeness of an ecosystem in relation to its natural potential.
