This is reported in a <a href=\"https:\/\/besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/1365-2435.70034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by the <strong>Chinese Academy of Sciences<\/strong> published in the journal Functional Ecology. \u201cRock outcrops resulting from various geological processes are common in mountain ecosystems, significantly impacting ecosystem functions in diverse ways,\u201d the study explains.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"dB8AOvyOyJ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/mountain-meadows-climate-change\/\">Mountain meadows are threatened by climate change<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Mountain meadows are threatened by climate change&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/mountain-meadows-climate-change\/embed\/#?secret=s235mz3pWG#?secret=dB8AOvyOyJ\" data-secret=\"dB8AOvyOyJ\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The essential role of mountain ecosystems<\/h5>\n<p>Mountains, the researchers remind, cover <strong>nearly a quarter of the Earth&#8217;s surface<\/strong> and support about 15 percent of the global population by offering crucial services, from providing fresh water to maintaining global biodiversity and absorbing carbon. Crucial, then, is their impact on the land through their natural <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/rock-dust-co2-capture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">degradation<\/a>. \u201cWeathering processes are vital for the elemental biogeochemical cycles and affect soil <strong>nutrient availability<\/strong>,\u201d they explain.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/1365-2435.70034#fec70034-bib-0029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, for example, \u201cdemonstrated that <strong>nitrogen weathering<\/strong> from bedrock is a significant source of nitrogen for <strong>terrestrial ecosystems<\/strong>, contributing 8 to 26% of the pre-industrial nitrogen budget and 6 to 17% of the modern nitrogen budget.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Larger outcrops, of course, undergo more intense degradation as a result of greater exposed surface area and, as a result, release more minerals and nutrients, which accumulate in the soil <strong>promoting the fertility<\/strong> and growth of plants and microorganisms. Rocks, in short, \u201cplay a significant role in shaping the ecological processes and functions of surrounding soils.\u201d However, \u201ctheir effects on soil functions and processes remain poorly quantified, and the mechanisms behind them are not fully understood.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"4EiFU3EYph\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/crop-yields-rock-emissions\/\">Rock dust pushes crop yields higher and CO2 emissions down<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Rock dust pushes crop yields higher and CO2 emissions down&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/crop-yields-rock-emissions\/embed\/#?secret=qjzAfwGCLR#?secret=4EiFU3EYph\" data-secret=\"4EiFU3EYph\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The study<\/h5>\n<p>To better understand these processes, the authors conducted a field study in the <strong>mountainous regions of southwestern China<\/strong>. Here they selected 31 rocky outcrops of various sizes by collecting plant litter and soil samples at different distances: 0-20 cm and 20-50 cm. The researchers evaluated soil functions in five aspects: nutrient supply, microbial growth efficiency, decomposition of soil organic matter, nutrient cycling and plant-microbe symbiosis.<\/p>\n<p>According to the study, soil functions are most pronounced near rocky outcrops, which, by capturing dust, rainwater and litter as well as nitrogen and phosphorus from <strong>atmospheric deposition<\/strong>, create particularly favorable conditions in the interaction between rocks, soil, microorganisms and plants. In contrast, \u201csmaller rocks contributed fewer resources, while excessively large rocks limited the accumulation of nutrients and organic matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Gk1NVNcHjp\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/crushed-rock-soil-carbon\/\">Crushed volcanic rock helps soil capture carbon<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Crushed volcanic rock helps soil capture carbon&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/crushed-rock-soil-carbon\/embed\/#?secret=5ZOM12e1pN#?secret=Gk1NVNcHjp\" data-secret=\"Gk1NVNcHjp\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Distance and size of outcrops are crucial<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Our results suggested that<strong> soil multifunctionality<\/strong> and microbial growth efficiency were significantly greater at closer distances (0\u201320\u2009cm) &#8211; approximately 17% and 24% higher, respectively &#8211; than at further distances (20\u201350\u2009cm) from rock outcrops.&#8221; The size is also important: \u201cSoil multifunctionality around medium-sized rocks (i.e. 2\u20134\u2009m) was approximately 40%\u201360% greater than that around smaller rocks (i.e. 0\u20131\u2009m).\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Finally, \u201cFurther analysis showed that <strong>exchangeable calcium and soil organic carbon<\/strong> emerged as the most important intermediary variables connecting rock size and distance to soil multifunctionality.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The study, in short, showed how rock outcrops create specific \u201chotspots\u201d where soil functions are enhanced.
