This is highlighted by some unusual as well as overlooked victims: <strong>hedgehogs<\/strong>. That&#8217;s according to researchers at <strong>Lund University<\/strong> in Sweden, who, in a study, examined the remains of these animals and found traces of hazardous substances such as lead, pesticides, brominated fire retardants, plastic additives, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/heavy-metals-antibiotic-bacteria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heavy metals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUrban environments are exposed to a substantial range of <strong>anthropic pressures<\/strong>, including chemical exposure,\u201d explains the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0269749125000211?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> published in the journal Environmental Pollution. \u201cWhile <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trace_metal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trace metals<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Legacy_pollution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legacy pollutants<\/a> have been well documented, the extent of wildlife exposure to<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Contaminants_of_emerging_concern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> emerging contaminants<\/a> has received little attention, in terrestrial mammals.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"wPtqNG5Ri4\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/tropical-plants-contaminated-soils\/\">Tropical plants provide a solution for heavy metal-contaminated soils<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Tropical plants provide a solution for heavy metal-contaminated soils&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/tropical-plants-contaminated-soils\/embed\/#?secret=DQeCWA4Cn1#?secret=wPtqNG5Ri4\" data-secret=\"wPtqNG5Ri4\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Hedgehogs offer an <strong>environmental fingerprint<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The research set out to identify the risk factors for animals and humans constituted by pollutant compounds. Choosing, on this occasion, to observe a species judged to be <strong>particularly useful in describing the scenario<\/strong> as a whole. \u201cBecause hedgehogs travel long distances \u2013 in and out of parks and gardens every night \u2013 and eat insects and other invertebrates, they are particularly exposed to high concentrations of environmental pollutants,\u201d the study explains.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to <strong>Maria Hansson<\/strong>, Lund toxicologist and lead author of the research, quoted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lunduniversity.lu.se\/article\/surprising-number-environmental-pollutants-hedgehogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, the hedgehogs&#8217; analysis specifically provides \u201ca kind of <strong>environmental fingerprint<\/strong> of what is in an area\u2019s ecosystem.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This information, she adds, is \u201cvery difficult to access, but the hedgehogs have enabled us to gain a unique insight into what kind of urban environmental pollution we have directly around us.\u201d As far as is known, the study further points out, the Swedish researchers are the first to have documented the exposure of these animals to pollutants.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38880\" style=\"width: 1953px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38880\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38880\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/ricci-svezia.jpg\" alt=\"I resti raccolti nel 2021 e 2022 sono stati utilizzati per caratterizzare il livello, la distribuzione tissutale e la composizione delle sostanze nei campioni. Hansson, \u201cThe dead can talk: Investigating trace element and organic pollutant exposure in mammalian roadkill under contrasting habitats\u201d, Environmental Pollution, Volume 367, 2025, 125648, ISSN 0269-7491, https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.envpol.2025.125648 Attribution 4.0 International CC BY 4.0 Deed<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Phthalates and PBCs are the most prevalent pollutants<\/h5>\n<p>Collecting the remains of hedgehogs detected between 2021 and 2022 in Lund and surrounding areas, the researchers analyzed the tissues measuring the presence of <strong>11 elements and 48 organic environmental pollutants<\/strong>. \u201cWhat surprised us was that there were so many different environmental pollutants in the animals, such as PCBs and several different phthalates, and that there were very high concentrations of certain heavy metals, especially lead,\u201d Hansson explains.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In particular, notes the study, \u201cPhthalate <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dieckmann_condensation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diesters<\/a> and PCBs were the most prevalent compounds in liver samples, with mean concentrations (\u00b1SD) of <strong>1090 \u00b1 681 and 284 \u00b1 231 ng g\u22121<\/strong> of dry weight, respectively.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Phthalates, the authors recall, are used in the production of materials such as <strong>plastics<\/strong> and in <strong>rubber<\/strong> while PCBs are toxic substances whose use in manufacturing was <strong>banned<\/strong> back in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"EeGksKnGVO\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/pollution-soil-invertebrates-climate\/\">For soil invertebrates, pollution is a worse threat than climate<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;For soil invertebrates, pollution is a worse threat than climate&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/pollution-soil-invertebrates-climate\/embed\/#?secret=pFB8bWdVXs#?secret=EeGksKnGVO\" data-secret=\"EeGksKnGVO\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The results are a warning sign for humans as well<\/h5>\n<p>The study showed how urban environments contain a large amount of substances that are both environmentally and health problematic. Hazardous pollutants that, the scientists again remind us, come from a variety of sources such as construction materials, plastics, <strong>pesticides<\/strong>, air pollution, <strong>garbage<\/strong>, tire residues and <strong>contaminated soil<\/strong>. Therefore, the survey adds, more environmental monitoring of soil and organisms in urban green areas becomes necessary.<\/p>\n<p>But that is not all. In general, little is still known about how different animal species are affected by environmentally hazardous substances, and the study of wildlife is considered complex. However, the information gathered on hedgehogs is still a <strong>cause for concern<\/strong>. \u201cAs hedgehogs are mammals just like us, it is worrying to find substances that we know are endocrine
