Although with different responses, bacteria and fungi maintain their basic functions thus ensuring ecosystem services<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Urbanization impacts <strong>diversity of microbes<\/strong> but with divergent effects on <strong>bacteria<\/strong> and <strong>fungi<\/strong>. Bacteria, in fact, tend to homogenize while fungi retain greater ecological specialization. This was revealed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666498425000250?via%3Dihub#bib18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in Environmental Science and Ecotechnology. The investigation involved experts from <strong>Shanghai<\/strong> (Jiao Tong) and <strong>Helsinki<\/strong> universities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUrban land use typically disturbs soil structure, increases soil nutrient concentrations, elevates heavy metal levels, and degrades and fragments habitats, thereby favoring species adapted to these altered conditions,\u201d the research explains. \u201cAdditionally, urbanization often homogenizes species assemblages\u201d. A phenomenon, the authors explain, that involves every species.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"NIhNtwdA5a\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/microbes-diversity-soil-climate-change\/\">Diversity of soil microbes increases with climate change<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Diversity of soil microbes increases with climate change&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/microbes-diversity-soil-climate-change\/embed\/#?secret=h2dfkaPg0J#?secret=NIhNtwdA5a\" data-secret=\"NIhNtwdA5a\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Urbanization generates greater homogenization<\/h5>\n<p>Indeed, homogenization of functions \u201chas been reported to correlate with changes in plant and animal communities.\u201d However, say the authors, \u201cstudies often overlook <strong>bacterial and fungal communities<\/strong> in urban habitats, despite their critical roles in ecosystem processes and resilience to disturbance.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Soil bacteria and fungi play <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/microbes-fertilizer-price\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">key functions in nutrient mineralization<\/a> and <strong>organic matter decomposition<\/strong>. Although their roles, the scientists explain, often differ at various stages of substrate decomposition.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBacterial and fungal responses to disturbances likely diverge because of the greater <strong>adaptive potential of bacteria<\/strong>\u2014driven by, for example, shorter generation times and more frequent horizontal gene transfer (HGT)\u2014compared to fungi,\u201d the study further notes. \u201cSuch differences may result in asynchrony between disturbance-induced community dynamics and the functional potentials of these taxa\u2014similar to macro-organisms, whose species respond variably to urban disturbances due to their distinct life-history traits.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"6kSyaVNGda\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/bacteria-grassland-soil-acidita\/\">Bacteria help predict soil acidity in grasslands<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Bacteria help predict soil acidity in grasslands&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/bacteria-grassland-soil-acidita\/embed\/#?secret=OVQf7B74TJ#?secret=6kSyaVNGda\" data-secret=\"6kSyaVNGda\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The study<\/h5>\n<p>The study, conducted on different plant communities-from undisturbed forests to urban parks of different ages in three urban areas. These represent as many climatic biomes: boreal in Lahti, Finland, temperate in Baltimore, USA, and tropical in Singapore. The investigation showed that the similarity between bacterial communities increases significantly in urban environments with an expansion <strong>between 79 percent and 85 percent<\/strong>. While fungi are found to be more resistant to homogenization.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cClimate had a <strong>strong influence on soil microbiota<\/strong>, yet urbanization still significantly altered both bacterial and fungal communities in all regions,\u201d the study notes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBacterial communities exhibited high adjustability to urban conditions, <strong>dominated by generalist taxa &#8211; about 90 % &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0whereas fungal communities consisted <strong>mostly of specialists <\/strong>(linked to specific habitats, ed.): <strong>about 83 %<\/strong>.\u201d This difference stems from the faster evolutionary rate of bacteria, favored by short generation times and horizontal gene transfer, compared to fungi, whose slower evolution still binds them to defined ecological niches.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38793\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38793\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38793\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/funghi-batteri-urbani-Low-Res_\u5c4f\u5e55\u622a\u56fe-2025-04-01-180514.jpg\" alt=\"Impatto dell'urbanizzazione sulle comunit\u00e0 microbiche del suolo in diversi climi e tipi di vegetazione. Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/multimedia\/1067082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental Science and Ecotechnology<\/a>, marzo 2025 Licence CC BY<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Management of urban spaces must take microbes into account<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cUrbanization is a powerful force reshaping soil microbial communities, yet bacteria and fungi respond in strikingly different ways,\u201d <strong>Nan Hui<\/strong>, a researcher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Helsinki and lead author of the study, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1078975\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. \u201cBacteria swiftly adapt to urban conditions, whereas fungi retain their ecological specialization, highlighting the complex interplay between microbial adaptation and ecosystem resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Despite the different response to urbanization, in each case, bacteria and fungi <strong>continue to perform their basic functions<\/strong> thus ensuring key services such as nutrient cycling and decomposition of organic matter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The study, therefore, provides a better understanding of the responses of microbial communities to urban pressures, thus providing important insights for the sustainable management of cities. The implications, in particular, relate to the design of green spaces that support microbial biodiversity and soil health.
