This is highlighted by, the case of <strong>Southeast Asia<\/strong>, where this <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agroforestry-hawaii-climate-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">particular practice<\/a>, which combines native plant protection with agricultural cultivation, has shown positive results overall.<\/p>\n<p>This was claimed by researchers from the National University of Singapore, Vietnam National University in Hanoi and Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. Whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41893-025-01532-w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, published in Nature Sustainability, assessed trends in <strong>deforestation rates<\/strong> in 38 subnational regions in the area between 2015 and 2023.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"OE24NXOCQz\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agroforestry-hawaii-climate-goals\/\">Hawaii relies on agroforestry to meet their 2045 climate goals<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Hawaii relies on agroforestry to meet their 2045 climate goals&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agroforestry-hawaii-climate-goals\/embed\/#?secret=trCk7LX8y1#?secret=OE24NXOCQz\" data-secret=\"OE24NXOCQz\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Does agroforestry impact climate?<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cAgroforestry, the integration of trees and shrubs into agricultural landscapes, can deliver multiple ecological and socio-economic co-benefits, including <strong>enhanced biodiversity<\/strong>, improved soil health, increased agricultural productivity and carbon sequestration,\u201d the researchers explain. Its multiple benefits, they add, have been widely studied. Some questions, however, remain unanswered beginning with the ability of this strategy to influence <strong>land use<\/strong> and total carbon balance.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSo far, it is unclear whether agroforestry is climate-positive at landscape scale,\u201d the study continues. \u201cVarious mechanisms have been suggested on how agroforestry <strong>could increase or reduce deforestation<\/strong> at that scale, but their cumulative effect is rarely tested.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to some, this strategy may provide new sources of income for local communities by reducing the need for deforestation to create farmland. The data collected over the period provided some relevant insights. In general, for example, the practice led on average to a <strong>reduction in deforestation<\/strong> to an extent of 1.08 percent.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This effect, observed in 22 of the 38 regions analyzed, resulted in additional protection of <strong>more than 250 thousand hectares<\/strong> per year and a reduction in emissions of nearly <strong>59 million tons <\/strong>of CO2.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The researchers noted that in the other 16 regions observed, deforestation increased over the years but to a lesser extent (0.64 percent). Agroforestry also had a positive impact in many forest-rich areas with high carbon concentrations and characterized, often, by valuable habitats for biodiversity conservation of species.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"25MU3bvxsN\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/atlas-soil-asia\/\">Asia has its first &#8216;soil atlas&#8217;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Asia has its first &#8216;soil atlas&#8217;&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/atlas-soil-asia\/embed\/#?secret=5g9vSQUOMf#?secret=25MU3bvxsN\" data-secret=\"25MU3bvxsN\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Community management has been crucial<\/h5>\n<p>In general, silvicultural practice has reduced deforestation in <strong>Laos<\/strong>, parts of northern <strong>Vietnam<\/strong>, northern and eastern <strong>Myanmar<\/strong>, Sumatra, Borneo, and peninsular <strong>Malaysia<\/strong>. Deforestation, by contrast, has increased in eastern <strong>Cambodia<\/strong>. But what factors were crucial? Previous studies have shown that agroforestry is influenced by many factors including the choice of community management. A point that is supported by more recent experience.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFor instance, <strong>Indonesia<\/strong> has rapidly expanded land designated as \u2018social forestry areas\u2019 from 1.8 Mha in 2018 to <strong>5 Mha in 2022<\/strong>, which includes community-managed agroforestry among other allowed uses,\u201d the researchers explain.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf well-implemented and managed, this may make an important contribution, through both in situ carbon sequestration and avoided deforestation to Indonesia achieving <strong>net zero<\/strong> in its forestry and other land-use sector.\u201d In the future, strategies such as protecting land rights and working with local communities will continue to drive <strong>agroforestry success<\/strong> and emissions reductions, and therefore, \u201cwill be crucial for Southeast Asia to achieve its climate goals.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A study has measured the impact
