Two of them, in particular, have always been a significant concern for <strong>farmers in the United States<\/strong>: the <strong>Northern Corn Rootworm<\/strong> (Diabrotica barberi) and the <strong>Western Corn Rootworm<\/strong> (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera), so named in relation to the areas of greatest prevalence. Knowing their survival mechanisms, it goes without saying, is a key step in better understanding their dynamics and studying strategies to combat them.<\/p>\n<p>Providing a contribution in this regard recently was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666515824000349?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> from the <strong>University of Kentucky<\/strong>. Which, its authors claim, reveals a previously unknown issue: the genetic mechanisms that enable these pests to withstand the severity of winter.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"8TnC556AJI\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-change-us-agriculture\/\">This is how climate change will alter U.S. agriculture<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;This is how climate change will alter U.S. agriculture&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-change-us-agriculture\/embed\/#?secret=Kx7nM8Pzf4#?secret=8TnC556AJI\" data-secret=\"8TnC556AJI\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Hibernation saves corn pests<\/h5>\n<p>The two pathogens, recalls a University of Kentucky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.research.uky.edu\/news\/corn-rootworms-secret-weapon-how-genetic-pause-helps-billion-dollar-pest-survive-winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, cause billions of dollars of damage each year in <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/innovation-technology\/soil-moisture-space-nasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. agricultural regions<\/a>. Their most important weapon is what is known as diapause, a <strong>hibernation-like<\/strong> phenomenon that allows eggs to remain dormant in the soil for several months.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>During this period, <strong>biological processes<\/strong> that require energy are minimized, while the protective functions that help them <strong>survive cold <\/strong>are strengthened.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Because of its hibernation, the embryo of the corn cockle can thus get through the most treacherous months and then hatch when the plant&#8217;s roots are available for attack. The pests, in other words, actually adapt to the timing of planting and thus become <strong>difficult to control<\/strong>. In the study, \u201cwe sequenced transcriptomes from both species at <strong>five time points<\/strong> (pre-diapause, diapause initiation, diapause maintenance, diapause termination, and post-diapause),\u201d the authors explain. Results, they add, \u201cindicate that transcriptional regulation is dynamic during diapause.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At this stage, with cell cycle arrest, <strong>the activity of cyclin-related genes decreases<\/strong> while the activities of heat shock proteins, proteasome and immune-related genes increase.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With post-diapause recovery, the research continues, there is a <strong>strong activation of cellular respiration<\/strong>. Comparative transcriptomic analyses the two maize rootworm species, western and northern, finally, \u201cindicated that while many gene expression changes were conserved across species, overall gene expression profiles were distinct.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"NWG4iqyQnU\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/usa-sensor-nutrient-loss\/\">US researchers test a sensor to assess nutrient loss<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;US researchers test a sensor to assess nutrient loss&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/usa-sensor-nutrient-loss\/embed\/#?secret=SaGQZlbA5T#?secret=NWG4iqyQnU\" data-secret=\"NWG4iqyQnU\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A step forward for crop defense<\/h5>\n<p>Although the results of this research do not yet translate into immediate solutions for agriculture, the information gathered represents an<strong> important step<\/strong>. \u201cThis study sheds light on the suite of mechanisms that allow some organisms to pause the symphony of cellular events that occur during embryonic development,\u201d the authors further note.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFurther, the mechanisms identified here may contribute to <strong>further research<\/strong> and pest management efforts in this economically important pest group.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The researchers hope that in the future <strong>experimental methods<\/strong> can be devised for laboratory development of parasite colonies capable of skipping the diapause period altogether or at least reducing it.
