The figures from Helsinki&#8217;s \u201cCentral Park\u201d<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some factors related to <strong>climate change<\/strong> are causing an increase in <strong>tree mortality<\/strong> in dry areas of urban forests. This is claimed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1618866725000068?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> from the <strong>University of Eastern Finland<\/strong> in Joensuu, which emphasizes the impact of droughts, heat waves, pests and fires. \u201cIncreased tree mortality rates have been observed worldwide in connection to climate warming-related processes, such as drought, heat, fire, and insect pest outbreaks,\u201d the study explains.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the research continues, \u201cAn understanding of the drivers of tree mortality during the Anthropocene is urgently needed to estimate forest vulnerability in a warmer climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"DkjywvCqKb\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/carbon-trees-finland\/\">Forests, climate and carbon storage: the lesson of Finnish trees<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Forests, climate and carbon storage: the lesson of Finnish trees&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/carbon-trees-finland\/embed\/#?secret=UXGjgMxhUl#?secret=DkjywvCqKb\" data-secret=\"DkjywvCqKb\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The research<\/h5>\n<p>The survey, whose results were published in the journal Urban Forestry and Urban Greening, focused on an urban forest in the Finnish capital known as <strong>Helsinki Central Park<\/strong>. In the area there are three main\u00a0 tree species: <strong>Norway spruce, Scots pine, and silver birch<\/strong>. The authors used aerial images captured <strong>between 2005 and 2021<\/strong> with spatial resolutions from 20 cm to 5 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Also examining <strong>digital plant elevation data<\/strong>, forest inventory and soil types that characterize the surrounding environment, researchers also analyzed climate variables such as temperature, precipitation, humidity and aridity index for each year and month. This compares to 379 in 2005-09. Over the 16 years of the period under review, the incidence of deaths increased from 0.5 to 0.6 specimens per hectare. \u201cIn total, <strong>6008 dead trees<\/strong> were observed from the aerial images collected during the monitoring period,\u201d the research explains. <strong>1,892<\/strong> of these in 2021 alone.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOur results showed that <strong>drought-related variables<\/strong>, i.e., the <a href=\"https:\/\/spei.csic.es\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">standardised precipitation evapotranspiration index<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.it\/en\/press-release\/attachment\/1765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palmer drought severity index<\/a>, were linked with increased tree mortality rates.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition, \u201cthe <strong>stand-level basal area<\/strong> predicted tree mortality risk and was linked to site type; smaller basal area stands were located on rocky dry soils, resulting in a greater probability of tree mortality\u201d. The findings, in particular, can help to effectively plan the management of growth sites.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Junttila <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uef.fi\/en\/article\/climate-change-increases-the-risk-of-tree-mortality-in-urban-boreal-forests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explains<\/a>, this does not mean that trees growing on high-risk sites should be ignored. Urban forests, after all, play a very important role. Just like extra-urban forests, in fact, they <strong>sequester CO2<\/strong>, thus contributing to climate mitigation, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-trees-cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cooling temperatures<\/a> and preventing the heat island effect.
