These operations allow them to maximize their aesthetic impact. But at the same time, they risk damaging their underground <strong>biodiversity<\/strong>. This is claimed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1618866724004266\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> from <strong>Cornell University<\/strong>, published in the journal Urban Forestry &amp; Urban Greening. In contrast, the research explains, less intensive grassland management can increase the richness and diversity of soil organisms.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"cTsYDnP4OF\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/mountain-meadows-climate-change\/\">Mountain meadows are threatened by climate change<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Mountain meadows are threatened by climate change&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/mountain-meadows-climate-change\/embed\/#?secret=XTrU822wAw#?secret=cTsYDnP4OF\" data-secret=\"cTsYDnP4OF\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Over 160,000 km2 of turfgrass in the U.S.<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cTurfgrass, an integral part of the built environment, covers a land area g<strong>reater than 163,000\u202fkm2<\/strong>\u00a0in the United States,\u201d the study explains. \u201cParticularly prominent are lawns, which we define as turfgrasses which <strong>surround human habitations<\/strong> like homes, public parks, and businesses, which are regularly managed to simultaneously maximize recreational, cultural, and aesthetic goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The authors, in particular, noted how less intensive management of lawns characterized, for example, by reduced pesticide use benefits certain organisms such as <strong>mesostigma mites<\/strong>. Which, says a Cornell <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2025\/02\/limiting-lawn-management-benefits-soil-ecosystems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, are among the major natural predators of agricultural pests such as <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/japan-study-nematodes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nematodes<\/a>. The mites, the researchers explain, play a <strong>controlling role<\/strong> in underground food webs. And thus contribute to <strong>soil ecosystem<\/strong> <strong>health<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"mM7hFXMcF7\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/grass-usa-bioplastics\/\">Here&#8217;s how U.S. native prairie grass can be turned into bioplastics<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Here&#8217;s how U.S. native prairie grass can be turned into bioplastics&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/grass-usa-bioplastics\/embed\/#?secret=aYmdzhBS59#?secret=mM7hFXMcF7\" data-secret=\"mM7hFXMcF7\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The experiment<\/h5>\n<p>Conducted at <strong>Cornell AgriTech<\/strong>, an experimental center located in Geneva, New York State, the study looked at three different lawn management strategies: <strong>high intensity<\/strong> (with regular use of pesticides, fertilizer and herbicides), <strong>medium intensity<\/strong> (with two fertilizer applications and limited pesticide use) and <strong>low intensity<\/strong> (with only weekly mowing). The researchers took soil samples from each area over a two-year period.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This enabled them to assess the <strong>biodiversity of subterranean organisms<\/strong>, soil chemical and physical properties, microbial biomass and soil water content.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOur results show that decreasing management intensity leads to increases in the abundance, richness, and diversity of soil fauna communities, with these changes being most apparent in certain taxa like predatory mites (e.g. Mesostigmata),\u201d the study explains. In summary, low-intensity management was associated with the presence of as many as <strong>87 different species<\/strong> of subterranean organisms. In contrast, high-intensity management had a negative impact on the diversity of them.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"KEI5I39eBv\"><p><a lawns<\/h5>\n<p>If managed properly, in short, lawns not only contribute to environmental health but can also support a wide range of understory species which play a crucial role in preserving the balance of the ecosystem. <strong>A reduction in pesticide and fertilizer use<\/strong>, the research notes, can improve soil health and biodiversity without unduly limiting the functionality and aesthetics of the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur study contributes to the growing body of literature advocating for ecologically minded turfgrass management,\u201d the authors explain. \u201cWhile the challenges of <strong>balancing aesthetic and ecological objectives<\/strong> in turfgrass lawns remain, our findings suggest that strategic implementation of low-input practices can mitigate some
