The targeted 30 percent reduction by the end of the decade appears \u201cunlikely\u201d<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The dispersion of <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/india-microplastics-mulch-films\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">microplastics<\/a> in the environment in the EU has clearly increased in recent years. And this trend seems to put at risk the achievement of the<strong> reduction targets<\/strong> set for 2030. This is the main conclusion of the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eionet.europa.eu\/etcs\/etc-he\/products\/etc-he-products\/etc-he-reports\/etc-he-report-2024-15-microplastic-releases-in-the-european-union\/@@download\/file\/ETC-HE%20Report%202024-15_task3141Report_v4.10_FINAL_for%20publication%2031-01-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by the European Environment Agency&#8217;s<strong> European Environment Information and Observation Network<\/strong> (Eionet), which looked at different sources of contamination, including tire abrasion, pellets and paints.<\/p>\n<p>The authors, in particular, developed <strong>qualitative and quantitative analyses<\/strong> based on data from Eurostat and sector reports. Highlighting a less than reassuring picture of a dangerous phenomenon that impacts soil and water and human health.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"fumEjq1zB4\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/france-soils-contaminated-microplastics\/\">Three quarters of soils in France contaminated with microplastics<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Three quarters of soils in France contaminated with microplastics&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/france-soils-contaminated-microplastics\/embed\/#?secret=GGnti0URUn#?secret=fumEjq1zB4\" data-secret=\"fumEjq1zB4\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The study<\/h5>\n<p>This study examined progress toward the goal set by the European Union&#8217;s <strong>Zero Pollution Action Plan (ZPAP)<\/strong>. The plan calls for a <strong>30 percent reduction in the release of microplastics <\/strong>by the end of the decade. The difficulty in constant monitoring and the adoption of harmonized analytical methods, the authors explained, made it necessary to define a new indicator capable of describing the phenomenon as a whole, taking into account different sources.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Created by analyzing available data and considering different criteria such as geographic coverage, the <strong>new simplified indicator<\/strong> showed a continuous increase in emissions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Recent studies, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/HTML\/?uri=SWD:2023:332:FIN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Impact Assessment Report<\/a> published in 2023 by the European Commission, indicate that tire abrasion and pellet losses are the main sources of microplastic pollution. Three of them, they explain, use similar methodologies to identify <strong>potential sources of accidental release of microplastics<\/strong> and estimate their emissions based on sector-specific studies. The fourth, an <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.tno.nl\/publication\/34640142\/ytwrjH\/TNO-2022-microplastics-eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> published in 2022 by the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) adopted instead the so-called Material Flow Analysis (MFA) methodology. This assesses the environmental fate of certain products throughout their life cycle. The different methods used resulted in the identification of significantly different sources.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In each case, the researchers were able to produce a simplified map of the sources. In this way they estimated their <strong>contribution <\/strong>\u00a0to the overall dispersion in the environment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although to a varying extent according to the different studies, <strong>vehicle tires<\/strong> were found to be the main source of microplastics, Their contribution, in fact, is estimated <strong>between 36 and 64 percent<\/strong> of the total. Tires are followed by paints (6 to 46 percent depending on the study) and packaging (29 percent). Artificial turf contribution is estimated between 6 and 17 percent. Pellets are responsible from 3 to 11 percent of the total. Between 2016 and 2022, the release of microplastics has in fact increased to a significant extent. \u201cBased on data from Eurostat and sectoral reports, the report defines a composite indicator which shows <strong>a 7.5-8.6% increase<\/strong> in emissions over this period\u201d the authors explain. \u201cSpecifically, indicators for tyre abrasion rose by 12.3%, plastic pellets by 7%, and paint by 5%.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Despite the uncertainties in the estimates, they continue, \u201cthe findings suggest that microplastic emissions have not decreased since 2016, confirming the <strong>importance of recent or forthcoming European initiatives<\/strong> to reduce microplastic emissions.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These recent regulatory measures, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sgs.com\/en\/news\/2023\/10\/safeguards-12623-eu-regulates-microplastics-under-reach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">REACH<\/a> (Registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals) regulation and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/P-9-2023-002208_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Euro 7<\/a> regulation, which sets limits for particle emissions from tire abrasion, are certainly significant. But their results, the authors say, will only be visible in the coming years.
