Producers&#8217; lobby under attack<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two trillion euros. That is, 1<strong>00 billion a year for two decades<\/strong>. That&#8217;s the cost of decontaminating European soils from residues of <strong>PFAS<\/strong>, the fluorine-based substances of industrial origin known as forever chemicals, in reference to their inability to degrade in the absence of specific interventions. This <a href=\"https:\/\/foreverpollution.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was reported<\/a> in recent weeks by the 46 journalists involved in the <strong>Forever Lobbying Project<\/strong>, an investigation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/les-decodeurs\/article\/2025\/01\/14\/pfas-how-le-monde-estimated-the-cost-of-decontaminating-europe_6737026_8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coordinated<\/a> by the French newspaper Le Monde-that has involved 18 researchers and experts in the study of more than 14,000 unpublished documents since 2023.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"OBO1VeCZOI\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/contamination-fluorine-soil-research-pfas\/\">Worrying data in the U.S. on PFAS contamination in soil<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Worrying data in the U.S. on PFAS contamination in soil&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/contamination-fluorine-soil-research-pfas\/embed\/#?secret=BJYgkXTkVn#?secret=OBO1VeCZOI\" data-secret=\"OBO1VeCZOI\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Hazardous and difficult-to-dispose-of substances<\/h5>\n<p>The PFAS category includes <strong>more than 10 thousand substances<\/strong> defined as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/australia-decontamination-fluorine-pfas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">considered particularly hazardous to human health<\/a>. These are highly stable compounds that \u201care used in products designed to repel grease and water but are not readily biodegradable,&#8221; the journal Scientific American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/pesticides-are-spreading-toxic-lsquo-forever-chemicals-rsquo-scientists-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>. PFASs are typically found in <strong>fluorinated pesticides<\/strong> (i.e., those that contain one or more fluorine atoms in their molecular structure). These substances are considered particularly effective in combating plant <strong>pests<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Such efficacy is favored precisely because of their <strong>chemical stability<\/strong>, which promotes their prolonged action. This characteristic, of course, implies significant difficulty in <strong>disposal<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to some <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/flourinated-pesticides-health-environment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a>, the half-life of some fluorinated pesticides-that is, the time it takes for their presence in the environment to be halved after spraying-can be as long as <strong>2 1\/2 years<\/strong>. Widespread since the second half of the 20th century, these substances are in fact also found in <strong>fire-fighting foams<\/strong>, paints, many types of coatings, and <strong>food packaging<\/strong>. Their residues inevitably leach out everywhere. These eternal pollutants \u201care in the <strong>soil<\/strong>, in raindrops, in our food, in our blood. They can cause cancers, hormone and immune disruption, and much more,\u201d the authors write.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese chemicals &#8211; they add &#8211; hide in soil and buildings, their contamination <strong>gradually affecting<\/strong> surrounding waters, ecosystems, and human populations.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"step13\" class=\"step\" data-scrollama-index=\"12\">\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"x8RlQdLnat\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/\">Pesticides rule in U.S. farmland as 146,000 MT of banned chemicals are in place<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Pesticides rule in U.S. farmland as 146,000 MT of banned chemicals are in place&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/embed\/#?secret=p0zAtjAIXK#?secret=x8RlQdLnat\" data-secret=\"x8RlQdLnat\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"step10\" class=\"step\" data-scrollama-index=\"9\">\n<h5>The calculation<\/h5>\n<p>To calculate <strong>decontamination costs<\/strong>, the researchers looked at both first-generation PFASs, which are characterized by long-chain molecules. These substances have long since been banned being substituted by new products with short chain. These \u201care extremely mobile and can very easily enter the cells of living creatures.\u201d So, \u201cCleaning up the most concentrated sources of <strong>long-chain<\/strong> PFAS in Europe would cost <strong>\u20ac4.8 billion <\/strong>per year\u201d the researchers write.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At the same time, \u201cIt would cost around <strong>\u20ac100 billion<\/strong> every year to remove <strong>short-chain<\/strong> and ultrashort-chain PFAS, even partially, from the environment and to destroy them. That\u2019s more than <strong>two trillion over 20 years<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0vkE4cqWvD0?si=DvC1LgliXL58j8GR\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>Accusations to lobby and the limits of regulation<\/h5>\n<p>In February 2023,<strong> five countries <\/strong>&#8211; Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden &#8211; proposed a <strong>universal ban on PFASs<\/strong> under the European chemicals regulation (<a href=\"https:\/\/echa.europa.eu\/it\/regulations\/reach\/understanding-reach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">REACH<\/a> &#8211; Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) with some temporary exemptions. In response to this initiative, researchers say, hundreds of representatives from some 15 industry sectors began lobbying European decision makers to oppose the proposal.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Reviewing thousands of documents, the authors <a href=\"https:\/\/foreverpollution.eu\/lobbying\/the-disinformation-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenged<\/a> the <strong>lobbyists&#8217; arguments<\/strong>, finding them to be misleading, unfounded or potentially dishonest in many cases.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The plastics industry, in particular, would use the influence tactics \u201ctypical of the corporate world, used throughout the decades to defend tobacco, fossil fuels, and other chemicals and pesticides, like Monsanto\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/invasive-weeds-glyphosate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">glyphosate<\/a>.\u201d Moreover, <em>Le Monde<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/les-decodeurs\/article\/2025\/01\/14\/pfas-how-le-monde-estimated-the-cost-of-decontaminating-europe_6737026_8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">points out<\/a>, the regulatory process is reportedly at a standstill. \u201cOnly a few European countries have set specific limit values for TFA ((trifluoroacetic acid a member compound of the PFAS family, ed.),\u201d the newspaper writes. In general, Le Monde concludes, \u201cNot all PFAS are equally toxic at the same concentrations, but one thing is certain, according to experts: <strong>Current regulations are too lax<\/strong> to protect health.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The estimate is included in an investigation coordinated by the French newspaper Le Monde into the spread of PFAS in the Continent.
