The hypothesis is contained in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2402656121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that focuses on the phenomenon of <strong>rainfall recycling<\/strong>, the process by which moisture released into the atmosphere by plants, soil, lakes and other landscape features is returned to the soil as rain.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"DoZ5JgLbOL\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-moisture-space-nasa\/\">NASA will monitor soil moisture on Earth&#8217;s surface<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;NASA will monitor soil moisture on Earth&#8217;s surface&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-moisture-space-nasa\/embed\/#?secret=41WMoswoir#?secret=DoZ5JgLbOL\" data-secret=\"DoZ5JgLbOL\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Agriculture, recycling and rainfall<\/h5>\n<p>The group of scientists, led by <strong>Zhe Zhang<\/strong>, a researcher at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) of the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Boulder, Colorado, focused on the so-called Corn Belt, the <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-protection-nasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agricultural region<\/a> located in the west-central U.S.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe <strong>US Corn Belt<\/strong>, a major foodbasket in the world, has undergone vast <strong>agricultural expansions<\/strong> through history, which have profoundly transformed the landscape and <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/global-report-floods-droughts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water cycle<\/a>,\u201d the study says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, \u201cprevious modeling studies with simplifying assumptions or missing physical processes have struggled to accurately quantify the <strong>impact of land surface<\/strong> on precipitation recycling, a key process where evapotranspiration (ET) contributes to precipitation in the same region.\u201d The research therefore aimed to quantify the impact of agricultural activities on recycling by highlighting their effect on precipitation during the growing season of crops.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"DtINYot9TU\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-change-us-agriculture\/\">This is how climate change will alter U.S. agriculture<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;This is how climate change will alter U.S. agriculture&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-change-us-agriculture\/embed\/#?secret=yRuPtPOCr6#?secret=DtINYot9TU\" data-secret=\"DtINYot9TU\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Recycling rate reaches 18 percent<\/h5>\n<p>Using high-resolution atmospheric simulation models, scientists could analyze the interaction between groundwater, crop growth and irrigation. The researchers, in detail, compared simulations that included all of these factors with others that were partially devoid of them. The study looked at <strong>three specific years<\/strong>: 2010, which was wetter than usual; 2011, which had average rainfall; and 2012, a dry year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe increase in precipitation is attributed to a significant enhancement of the precipitation recycling ratio <strong>from 14 to 18%<\/strong>,\u201d the research notes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This result is related to a combination of surface groundwater, corn plants releasing moisture into the atmosphere and evaporation from irrigation systems. Without these factors, the recycling rate would have been only 14 percent, or 30 percent less. The researchers observed a higher fraction of recycled precipitation in 2012, when moisture from other regions, such as the <strong>Gulf of Mexico<\/strong>, was more limited. In general, the research notes, the phenomenon of recycled rainfall \u201cis stronger in a dry year than normal and wet years, depending on both large-scale moisture transport and local evapotranspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"fDquSIoHtv\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-water-agriculture-fao-solaw\/\">&#8220;Soil depletion in the last decade has been shocking and alarming&#8221;, FAO experts say<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;&#8220;Soil depletion in the last decade has been shocking and alarming&#8221;, FAO experts say&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-water-agriculture-fao-solaw\/embed\/#?secret=PL2Rv6zVkQ#?secret=fDquSIoHtv\" data-secret=\"fDquSIoHtv\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Water and food security<\/h5>\n<p>The research provides new information on a multifaceted phenomenon, the authors explain. \u201cThis research shows how agricultural practices can modify regional climate, with implications for<strong> food and water security<\/strong>,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ucar.edu\/133005\/change-weather-corn-belt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> Zhe Zhang, the study&#8217;s lead author. \u201cIn an agricultural region like the U.S. Corn Belt where rainfall is critical, it\u2019s important for both farmers and water resource managers to understand where the rain comes from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers announced that they will now conduct further studies to investigate how changes in rainfall may affect <strong>agricultural productivity<\/strong>. Understanding rainfall recycling, they add, not only helps improve climate predictions, but also provides useful insights for planting strategies and water resource
