Without reversing course \u201cthe Earth&#8217;s ability to sustain human and environmental well-being is compromised\u201d<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Land degradation is increasing around the world at the rate of <strong>one million square kilometers every year<\/strong>, with <strong>global warming mitigation<\/strong> efforts and efforts to protect food security in a sustainable sense being undermined in the process. This is claimed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-11\/PIK%20SRL_Full%20Report_Web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by the <strong>Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research<\/strong> (PIK). Recognizing its centrality, therefore, \u201cis essential for<strong> maintaining environmental stability<\/strong> and promoting sustainable development for current and future generations,\u201d the report states. Today, however, the land is threatened by the presence of critical factors.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLand degradation is driven by human activities, such as <strong>unsustainable agricultural practices<\/strong>, conversion of natural ecosystems, <strong>deforestation<\/strong> and urbanisation,\u201d the study explains.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOther environmental challenges such as climate change and <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/urban-biodiversity-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biodiversity loss<\/a> are closely linked to land degradation.\u201d These issues further promote the phenomenon by creating a vicious cycle and putting global sustainability at risk.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"VeTwuJcWnb\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sos-phosphorus-agriculture\/\">Goodbye phosphorus: how soil degradation is taking a key element away from agriculture<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Goodbye phosphorus: how soil degradation is taking a key element away from agriculture&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sos-phosphorus-agriculture\/embed\/#?secret=R1AUdffdwx#?secret=VeTwuJcWnb\" data-secret=\"VeTwuJcWnb\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Drylands in Asia, Africa, the U.S. and the Mediterranean at risk<\/h5>\n<p>Unsustainable agricultural practices, the Guardian recalls, are responsible <strong>for 80 percent of deforestation<\/strong> and contribute to soil degradation in a variety of ways beginning with the overuse of chemicals and pesticides. Also under scrutiny are the terrestrial ecosystems called upon to provide climate mitigation. \u201cUntil recently land ecosystems absorbed <strong>nearly one-third of human-caused carbon dioxide pollution<\/strong>, even as those emissions increased by half,\u201d writes the British newspaper.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBut over the last decade the capacity of trees and soil to absorb excess CO\u2082 <strong>has shrunk by 20%<\/strong> due to deforestation and climate change.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The report identifies several arid regions particularly prone to degradation in South Asia, northern China, the U.S. Great Plains, California and the <strong>Mediterranean<\/strong>. This implies \u201cto avoid, reduce and reverse land degradation.\u201d Principles of equity and justice, in any case, are key when designing and implementing transformative actions, the authors point out, ensuring that benefits and burdens are equitably distributed.<\/p>\n<p>In this scenario, \u201cEffective evidence-based policies are crucial for transformative action, and ultimately for environmental and human wellbeing.\u201d In particular, \u201cthey must be supported by an enabling environment, substantial public and private investments, and a <strong>closer collaboration<\/strong> between science and policy.\u201d Important factors supporting these interventions include economic incentives, including public and private investment, effective regulation of resource use, and adequate coordination among those engaged in these efforts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Postdam researchers&#8217; snapshot: &#8220;transformative actions are needed to stop land degradation&#8221;.
