This is the conclusion of a University of Arkansas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/weed-technology\/article\/comparing-herbicide-application-methods-with-see-spray-technology-in-soybean\/05967C11D1BF0B174A13BE687B865AF2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in Weed Technology, a journal of the <strong>Weed Science Society of America<\/strong> (WSSA). The analysis evaluated the effectiveness of a sensing system mounted on an agricultural machine and designed to provide widespread distribution of the product as an alternative to massive dispersal. The research showed significant savings in product application, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/blog\/2024\/11\/21\/machine-vision-technology-shows-promise-to-reduce-herbicide-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> <strong>Tristen Avent<\/strong>, researcher and lead author of the paper, in a statement.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"B0hlP0DVYi\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/germany-pesticides-reduction\/\">Germany, the reduction in the use of pesticides is still too slow<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Germany, the reduction in the use of pesticides is still too slow&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/germany-pesticides-reduction\/embed\/#?secret=7Owtw0Q8T5#?secret=B0hlP0DVYi\" data-secret=\"B0hlP0DVYi\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The threat of weeds<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cProducers face economic and environmental pressure to <strong>reduce herbicide use<\/strong>, and the increasing occurrence of herbicide-resistant weeds threatens the options for successful chemical control,\u201d the study states. At the same time, however, farmers are faced with the problem of weeds that are known to \u201ccompete with crops for resources, reducing <strong>yield and harvest efficiency<\/strong>.\u201d Among these, the authors again remind us, is the so-called Amaranthus palmeri, a species widespread in North America that strongly impacts productivity.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Highlighting this, in particular, is the case of <strong>soybeans<\/strong>, which, in fields affected by this pest, experience yield declines of <strong>up to about 32 percent<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In this context, herbicides offer important support but not without negative externalities, on the environmental front and beyond. \u201cIn the United States, from 2017 to 2022, the total cost of production for row-crop farms increased by 26.6%, and chemicals accounted for an average of <strong>7.7% of the total cost<\/strong>,\u201d the study explains. Therefore, &#8220;With the increasing cost of production, producers are seeking technologies to reduce costs and improve profitability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"lCweIzkpZ3\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/invasive-weeds-glyphosate\/\">What if invasive weeds were winning the war against glyphosate?<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;What if invasive weeds were winning the war against glyphosate?&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/invasive-weeds-glyphosate\/embed\/#?secret=atC97ggk2o#?secret=lCweIzkpZ3\" data-secret=\"lCweIzkpZ3\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Targeted spraying is a possible solution<\/h5>\n<p>The study focused on See &amp; Spray technology mounted on agricultural machinery from John Deere, one of the largest U.S. companies in the industry. The system, the investigation explains, \u201cprovide the opportunity to reduce herbicide use by <strong>detecting weeds and target-spraying herbicides<\/strong> <strong>simultaneously<\/strong>.\u201d Authors conducted the experiments over a two-year period at two different location: Keiser, Arkansas, and Greenville, Mississippi. Following the targeted applications over soybean fields they compared the amounts of herbicide residues with traditional spraying dispersions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTreatments utilized consistent herbicides and rates with a preemergence (PRE) application followed by an early postemergence (EPOST) dicamba application followed by a mid-postemergence (MPOST) glufosinate application,\u201d the study explains. Several systems were evaluated including the sprinkler application method, a mixed system of traditional and targeted post-emergence applications, and targeted applications of all herbicides alone.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"3jWPWvehsY\"><p><a frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Use of herbicides can be reduced by nearly two-thirds<\/h5>\n<p>In summary, \u201c&#8221;On average, targeted sprays <strong>saved a range of 28.4% to 62.4%<\/strong> on postemergence herbicides&#8221;, spiega la ricerca. &#8220;On the basis of these results, with specific machine settings, targeted stewardship,\u201d the authors explain.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, the scientists noted how \u201cnozzle angle can influence potential herbicide savings, with narrower nozzle angles spraying less
