That is the message from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-024-01840-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by the <strong>University of Bonn<\/strong>, Germany, and the <strong>Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais<\/strong>, Brazil. Countering <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/suoli-tropicali-slash-burn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slash-and-burn practices<\/a>, in detail, \u201csignificantly reduce the concentration of particulate matter in the air,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.uni-bonn.de\/en\/faculty\/news\/press-archive\/2024\/rainforest-protection-reduces-the-number-of-respiratory-diseases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> highlights. &#8220;The number of hospital stays and deaths due to respiratory diseases thus also decreases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, recalls the study published in the journal Nature Communications, Earth &amp; Environment. nearly 70,000 square kilometers of forest, an area the size of Bavaria, were burned in the <strong>Amazon region<\/strong>. Smoke generated during fires, the researchers recall, is a major trigger of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"K9AgyNYYNB\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/pollution-soil-diseases-cardiovascular\/\">Soil pollution causes the spread of cardiovascular diseases<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Soil pollution causes the spread of cardiovascular diseases&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/pollution-soil-diseases-cardiovascular\/embed\/#?secret=0p8itwfxjT#?secret=K9AgyNYYNB\" data-secret=\"K9AgyNYYNB\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The survey of the Amazon region<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cThe conversion of tropical forests in the Amazon region for agriculture and other land uses is associated with health risks linked, for example, to <strong>air and water pollution<\/strong> from forest fires and agrochemical use,\u201d the study points out. However, \u201cSeveral conservation policies introduced in the 2000s aimed at reducing deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The research looks at interventions implemented after 2006 beginning with the so-called <strong>Soy Moratorium<\/strong>, which committed global trading companies to stop buying the raw material grown in newly deforested areas.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By comparing areas subject to the moratorium with neighboring areas, researchers were able to identify the<strong> effects of forest protection efforts<\/strong> on public health. Noting, most notably, the decline in wildfires and, by extension, other related phenomena.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"pbheT5e3tp\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/microbes-soil-antibiotic-resistance\/\">Analysis of soil microbes is a major tool against antibiotic resistance<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Analysis of soil microbes is a major tool against antibiotic resistance&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/microbes-soil-antibiotic-resistance\/embed\/#?secret=a8702O85at#?secret=pbheT5e3tp\" data-secret=\"pbheT5e3tp\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Preventing forest fires saves 680 lives a year<\/h5>\n<p>In fact, the reduction in the incidence of burning, the study notes, has resulted in lower air concentrations of fine particulate matter, or the \u201c<strong>main vector for adverse health effects<\/strong> of fire smoke.\u201d This phenomenon \u201cleads to a<strong> reduction in the hospitalization and death prevalence rate<\/strong> due to respiratory health problems and other health benefits for the local population.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As a result of all this, the researchers then estimated that about <strong>680 deaths were avoided<\/strong> among the resident population as a result of reduced air pollution.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to <strong>Jan B\u00f6rner<\/strong>, a researcher at the University of Bonn and co-author of the study, two messages emerge from the research: \u201cNamely, firstly, that the destruction of the rainforest <strong>can be successfully curbed<\/strong>,\u201d he explains. \u201cAnd, secondly, that this benefits not only the diversity of species and the global climate but also very specifically and very quickly the <strong>local population<\/strong>. This is an aspect that is still given too little consideration when assessing protective measures.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"VhLKiEr0rZ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/healthy-soil-human-health\/\">Microbes and biodiversity. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/04-06-2021-who-joins-un-decade-on-ecosystem-restoration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has been already called into question<\/a> by the <strong>World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong>, which, in particular, emphasized that \u201cEcosystem restoration can significantly contribute to supporting health and well-being by helping to regulate infectious diseases, supporting food and nutrition security, and contributing to climate mitigation and adaptation.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The link between soil and health is a topic of growing interest. <strong>The World Economic Forum (WEF)<\/strong> had also previously spoken on the topic, highlighting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/08\/biodiversity-loss-immune-system-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the risks associated with the loss of biodiversity<\/a> and, more specifically, the decrease in soil microbial diversity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cContact with a diverse range of microbes in our environment is also essential for <strong>bolstering our immune system<\/strong>,\u201d the WEF noted. \u201cMicrobes found in environments closer to the ones we evolved in, such as woodlands and grasslands, are called \u201cold friend\u201d microbes by some microbiologists.
