Depending on the type of crop and the phenomenon, the decrease ranges between 13 and 36%<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Extreme <strong>weather<\/strong> conditions, favoured by climate change, have an impact on crop yields. However, this is phenomenon is hard to quantify accurately. Providing some answers in this regard are <strong>two recent Dutch studies<\/strong> that involved several researchers monitoring local crops to determine more accurately the impact of events such as heat waves, persistent droughts, downpours and prolonged rainfall. Both investigations analyse the differences in production from year to year with more and less weather events per farm or field.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"pl6uUHOK2U\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/conservation-agriculture-climate-change\/\">Conservation agriculture is stronger than climate change<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Conservation agriculture is stronger than climate change&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/conservation-agriculture-climate-change\/embed\/#?secret=Ryyxs3QP0j#?secret=pl6uUHOK2U\" data-secret=\"pl6uUHOK2U\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Drought and extreme rainfall explain yield variation almost entirely<\/h5>\n<p>The first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-024-01658-3\">study<\/a>, recalls a <strong>Wageningen University<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/newsarticle\/what-yields-per-acre-reveal-about-the-impact-of-extreme-weather-1.htm\">statement<\/a>, was sponsored by the <strong>Eindhoven University of Technology<\/strong> and focused on the potato harvest in several farm-managed plots between 2015 and 2020. The annual discrepancies between the yields of these plots were attributed to drought and heavy rainfall <strong>in 98% of the cases<\/strong>. Heavy rainfall reduced yields by 36%, drought lowered them by 13%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yields highly varied among fields, just as the impact of these weather extremes on individual fields,&#8221; the study explains. &#8220;Identifying on which fields the impact is small provides direction for<strong> adaption strategies, which are urgently needed<\/strong>, considering the expected increased frequency of weather extremes according to the latest climate change scenarios&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"XKMScXKc3P\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-floods-earthworms-soil\/\">New research will unveil the impact of climate change on soil earthworms<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;New research will unveil the impact of climate change on soil earthworms&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-floods-earthworms-soil\/embed\/#?secret=2CkiOnHM01#?secret=XKMScXKc3P\" data-secret=\"XKMScXKc3P\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Potatoes and onions are more sensitive to weather events<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ad7308\">research<\/a>, involving scientists from Wageningen and <strong>Amsterdam<\/strong> Universities, compared the yields of ten different crops by examining the numbers in a farm database (the <em>Dutch Farm Accountancy Data Network<\/em> &#8211; FADN). The study also identified when the influence of weather phenomena peaked. SOURCE: EU Joint Research Centre.<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Soil can also be an important factor<\/h5>\n<p>The researchers also showed how irrigation, <strong>soil types<\/strong> and nutrients influence the impact of weather conditions on crops. \u2018Soils such as sand or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loess\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loess<\/a> amplify the negative impact of drought on crop yield, while softening the impact of excessive precipitation,&#8217; they explain. \u2018Irrigation and to a lesser extent nutrient application are shown to moderately decrease the impact of extreme weather on crop yield.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"uAMkdg4iQ8\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/europe-climate-extreme-events\/\">In Europe extreme weather events resulted in \u20ac500 billion losses since 1980<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;In Europe extreme weather events resulted in \u20ac500 billion losses since 1980&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/europe-climate-extreme-events\/embed\/#?secret=jtjPi70don#?secret=uAMkdg4iQ8\" data-secret=\"uAMkdg4iQ8\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Climate favours extreme events<\/h5>\n<p>The results of the two studies provide further insight to the debate on the consequences of climate change in terms of the <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/previsioni-meteo-estate-eventi-estremi\/\">increasing incidence<\/a> of extreme weather events. Last year, for example, the European Environment Agency (EEA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/newsroom\/news\/what-could-the-summer-bring\">highlighted<\/a> how <strong>floods <\/strong> and <strong>flooding <\/strong>&#8211; which mainly affect the north-western and central area of the continent &#8211; caused total damage of almost<strong> 258 billion euros<\/strong> between 1980 and 2021, with the impact, in terms of costs, increasing by an average of more than 2% each year.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly serious is also the problem of<strong> drought events<\/strong>, which are now spread throughout the year across much of the region. Since 2018, in fact, extreme <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-change-soil-drought\/\">drought<\/a> has affected more than <strong>50 per cent of European soil<\/strong>, leading to a <strong>substantial decrease in harvests<\/strong> of crops such as maize, soya and olive oil. According to the EEA, the total annual economic <strong>losses<\/strong> expected across all economic sectors due to increased drought could rise from the current EUR 9 billion to up to EUR <strong>45 billion<\/strong> by the end of the century.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The reduction in crop yields following extreme weather events such as drought and heavy rain has been accurately quantified for the first time.
