According to the study, these strategies available to farmers can improve habitat conditions and regenerate landscapes, while managing <strong>soil and water<\/strong> in a sustainable way. Agriculture relies on essential processes such as <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/premature-deaths-loss-pollinators\/\"><strong>pollination<\/strong><\/a> and soil formation. Biodiversity, for its part, contributes to strengthening agriculture itself and food security. The strategic plans of the CAP, the Common Agricultural Policy of the EU Member States, currently <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=uriserv:OJ.L_.2021.435.01.0001.01.ENG\">include<\/a> measures to support these practices.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To effectively restore agro-ecosystems, however, says the EEA, &#8220;e<strong>nhanced and coherent policy incentives<\/strong> combined with adequate <strong>financing<\/strong> are needed to efficiently restore ecosystems that support food production and strong rural communities&#8221;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In Europe, nature restoration and the transition to sustainable agricultural practices are key objectives of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/it\/policies\/biodiversity\/\">Biodiversity Strategy 2030<\/a>. That is, curbing pollution, promoting the restoration of ecosystems which, in turn, improves the services they provide for the benefit of agricultural production.<\/li>\n<li>Reconstructing <strong>multifunctional agricultural landscapes rich in biodiversity<\/strong>. The list includes landscape elements such as tree rows, hedges and grassy margins. This can improve soil health and ecosystem services.<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining or restoring <strong>semi-natural habitats<\/strong>. This refers to farmers engaged in the management of biodiversity- and carbon-rich environments including those protected by the <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/nature-and-biodiversity\/habitats-directive_en\">relevant EU Directive<\/a> such as grasslands, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/england-habitat-biodiversity-crisis\/\">heathlands<\/a>, wooded pastures, traditional agroforestry systems and orchards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Examples of good agricultural practices in support of these three strategies include the protection and restoration of <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/praterie-potenziale-sequestro-carbonio\/\">grasslands<\/a> through <strong>grazing<\/strong>, agroforestry, organic soil restoration and the application of paludiculture, protection of landscape elements, maintenance of fallow land, crop <strong>rotation<\/strong> and soil <strong>cover<\/strong> with crop residues left on the ground.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"jOxwqONesf\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/europe-commission-drought-future\/\">Europe will be facing drought more often<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Europe will be facing drought more often&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/europe-commission-drought-future\/embed\/#?secret=cT8slmSfEh#?secret=jOxwqONesf\" data-secret=\"jOxwqONesf\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5><strong>EU ecosystems are under increasing pressure<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Due to the degradation of nature, the document continues, the capacity of ecosystems to support agriculture in Europe <strong>has decreased over the years<\/strong>. The intensification of agricultural production has led to the loss of biodiversity and soil degradation also driven by the massive use of chemical pesticides and mineral fertilisers as well as large-scale irrigation. The growing scarcity of water &#8211; due to pollution and the increased incidence of climate-related extreme events such as droughts &#8211; remains an obvious problem.<\/p>\n<p>It is no coincidence, recalls EEA, that financial institutions are still developing strategies to counter the <strong>economic impacts<\/strong> of these phenomena. \u2018&#8221;Agriculture and farmers are significantly exposed to nature-related risks such as yield and income loss due to soil erosion and declines in pollination,&#8221; the EEA writes. &#8220;The cost of productivity loss due to soil erosion in the EU is estimated at E<strong>UR 1.2 billion<\/strong> per year. Incorporating the restoration of agricultural ecosystems into farming practices holds the potential to reverse these trends.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European
