Thanks to the amount produced, in fact, it is possible to meet<strong>8% of the total nutrient requirements<\/strong> of urban and peri-urban agriculture in that area, mitigating water eutrophication and global warming.<\/p>\n<p>In the future, however, the contribution of <strong>composting<\/strong> could increase even further reducing the environmental impact. This is supported by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0956053X24002952?via%3Dihub\">study<\/a> conducted by the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the <strong>Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona<\/strong> (ICTA-UAB) and published in the journal <em>Waste Management<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"b4cJP9qHEZ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/compost-usa-2-bn\/\">US compost industry could get $2 bn brand new government funds<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;US compost industry could get $2 bn brand new government funds&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/compost-usa-2-bn\/embed\/#?secret=Tl4JtbIqvP#?secret=b4cJP9qHEZ\" data-secret=\"b4cJP9qHEZ\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Compost can meet one fifth of nutrient needs<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Cities face the challenges of <strong>supplying food<\/strong> <strong>and managing organic municipal solid waste (OMSW) sustainably<\/strong> amid increasing urbanization rates,&#8221; the authors write. &#8220;Urban agriculture (UA) can help with this effort by producing local crops that are fertilized with nutrients recovered from compost generated from OMSW.&#8221; According to the researchers&#8217; estimates, <strong>5,568 hectares (5,568 acres) of the city&#8217;s municipal solid waste (MSW)<\/strong> are located in the city and require a total of <strong>1,474 tonnes of<\/strong> so-called NPK (i.e. nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium-based) <strong>nutrients<\/strong> each year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"abstracts\" class=\"Abstracts u-font-serif\">\n<div id=\"ab010\" class=\"abstract author\">\n<div id=\"as010\">\n<div id=\"sp0010\" class=\"u-margin-s-bottom\">\n<blockquote><p>From the 5,106 tonnes of compost produced annually from organic solid waste in the same area, <strong>113 tonnes of nutrients<\/strong> (44 tonnes of phosphorus, 37 tonnes of potassium and 32 tonnes of nitrogen compounds) can currently be recovered, representing 8% of the total demand.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In this way, water eutrophication and the impact on climate change can be reduced. In the near future, however, the contribution of compost could increase significantly. \u2018&#8221;The more ambitious future scenario of 2025 <strong>can potentially substitute 21 % of the total NPK demand<\/strong>,&#8221; the research continues, with a significant positive effect in terms of reducing environmental impact. In this way it is not released into the atmosphere, being partly mineralised and partly converted into more stable fractions. By diverting waste from mixed treatment, methane emissions from landfills are also reduced.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In addition, there are other advantages: the substance enhances the water retention capacity of the soil, thus reducing the need for irrigation and <strong>saving<\/strong> <strong>water.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What also characterises compost is its <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/il-compost-e-decisivo-per-la-tutela-del-clima-e-del-suolo\/\">multiple applications<\/a>. This product, in particular, can be used as a <strong>soil conditioner in various sectors<\/strong>, from agriculture to landscaping. Finally, its use ensures greater workability of the soil, thus reducing the movement of agricultural machinery and the consequent consumption of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<div <strong>important<\/strong> environmental <strong>opportunities<\/strong> for cities, such as reducing emissions and producing clean energy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Compost, on the other hand, is made from our waste and provides the same nutrients as the mineral fertilizer; we have to make the most of it, and thus close the cycle,&#8221; says <strong>Juan David Arosemena<\/strong>, researcher at the Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uab.cat\/web\/newsroom\/news-detail\/compost-produced-from-organic-solid-waste-could-replace-21-of-industrial-fertilizers-in-urban-agriculture-1345830290613.html?detid=1345930557099\">statement<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, he adds, &#8220;to take full advantage of its benefits, certain<strong> barriers<\/strong> that currently hinder the circularity of nutrients in cities <strong>should be removed<\/strong>, such as the <strong>poor quality of agricultural soil<\/strong> in urban areas, the acceptance of compost as an alternative fertilizer and local regulations associated with organic fertilizer
