That&#8217;s why we need to improve the management of aquatic ecosystems to increase resilience<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture is the main <strong>source of impact<\/strong> on <strong>Europe&#8217;s<\/strong> <strong>surface water and groundwater<\/strong>, on which there is a strong demand for use as well as pollution due to intensive use of nutrients and pesticides. A trend set to intensify due to climate change. This is stated in the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/analysis\/publications\/europes-state-of-water-2024\">report<\/a> by the <strong>European Environment Agency (EEA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Pollution, habitat degradation, impacts of <strong>climate change<\/strong>, and the over-use of freshwater resources are putting pressure on Europe&#8217;s lakes, rivers, coastal waters and groundwaters like never before,\u2019 explains a <a href=\"\u2018https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/newsroom\/news\/state-of-water?utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz--4TabZhKl8m0JbgotsE2uufsj-JWqQQe_wX9rkvpA_rhldval0AmYgzF8bPMpJ8PiYx2lOdznqMOQ42yto7qw4X4VObeu9Kf6uoY-Fz1A7_nGHZq8&amp;_hsmi=96799758&amp;utm_content=96799758&amp;utm_source=hs_email&amp;activeAccordion=\u2019\">statement<\/a>. \u2018&#8221;Europe is not on track to meet its targets to improve the health of waters under EU rules\u2019. In this scenario, \u2018Better water management is key to improve water resilience\u2019.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"8PcwvxTVVV\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-nitrogen-pollution\/\">Soil nitrogen is the one responsible for water pollution<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Soil nitrogen is the one responsible for water pollution&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-nitrogen-pollution\/embed\/#?secret=fwCNjxihTr#?secret=8PcwvxTVVV\" data-secret=\"8PcwvxTVVV\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Two thirds of surface waters are in good condition<\/h5>\n<p>Carried out by processing data provided by 19 states, the study periodically paints a picture of the situation for <strong>85% of the surface water bodies<\/strong> (a total of 120,000) and <strong>87% (3.8 million km2) of the groundwater area<\/strong> in the European Union and Norway. The scenario that emerged, the authors explain, is not reassuring.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Only <strong>37% of<\/strong> European <strong>surface water bodies<\/strong> have achieved \u2018good\u2019 or \u2018high\u2019 ecological status, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/analysis\/indicators\/ecological-status-of-surface-waters\">specific measure<\/a> of the health of aquatic ecosystems, and <strong>only 29% of them<\/strong> show \u2018good\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/water.europa.eu\/freshwater\/europe-freshwater\/water-framework-directive-archived\/groundwater-chemical-status\">chemical status<\/a> in the 2015-2021 period.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the report, despite some progress, European waters and aquatic ecosystems are still <strong>severely impacted by chemicals<\/strong>, mainly due to air pollution from coal-fired power generation and the accumulation of nutrients and <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/pesticidi-obiettivo-ue-rischio\/\">pesticides<\/a> from agriculture. Habitat degradation is also widespread. SOURCE: EEA EU Environment Agency.<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>On water protection, Europe is lagging behind<\/h5>\n<p>To date, the measures taken by Member States have had some effect in mitigating the phenomenon by preventing further deterioration of the water status. by limiting the use of certain chemical pollutants and changing the outlook for some species in the affected ecosystems for the better. But <strong>no general improvement has been detected<\/strong> so far since the last monitoring cycle.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The same applies to <strong>groundwater<\/strong>, which also appears to be in better condition than its surface counterparts \u2018with 77% of it in good chemical and supply status and 91% in good quantitative status\u2019.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But even for them, problems of agricultural contamination remain evident, with excessive accumulation of nutrients and pesticides impacting on the availability of drinking water. Efforts at the EU level, in short, have not been sufficient so far. \u2018The deadline set by the <strong>EU&#8217;s Water Framework Directive (WFD)<\/strong> to meet good status for surface and groundwaters was 2015,\u2019 the statement observes. \u2018and at the latest by 2027. Reducing water use and <strong>improving efficiency<\/strong> are crucial, the authors explain. The setting of targets and the use of up-to-date and timely information are necessary in this respect. In addition, pressures on water resources must be reduced by preventing pollution and reducing the release <strong>of<\/strong> <strong>pollutants and nutrients<\/strong> into the water.<\/p>\n<p>Restoring nature, reconnecting rivers and their floodplains and<strong>regenerating wetlands<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/peatlands-climate-carbon\/\">peatlands<\/a> can make freshwater ecosystems healthier and richer in biodiversity, providing a qualitatively better resource while storing carbon and mitigating the impact of extreme weather events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the latest report of the EU Environment Agency, the use of pesticides in agriculture continues to impact water quality in Europe.
