More than half are of cardiovascular origin<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Chemical pollution of soil, water, air and food is \u2018a major environmental threat, leading to an estimated <strong>9 million premature deaths<\/strong> worldwide\u2019. This is according to research from the <strong>University of Mainz<\/strong>, Germany, which also involved researchers from other countries. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41569-024-01068-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, published in the journal Nature Reviews Cardiology, first of all calls into question the estimates of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthdata.org\/research-analysis\/gbd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Burden of Disease<\/a>, one of the largest research programmes on a global scale, according to which pollution would produce <strong>5.5 million deaths<\/strong> from cardiovascular diseases in 2019. The authors also paint a picture of the problem by emphasising the role of certain contaminants in particular, anthropogenic events and disease triggering mechanisms.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Hd9f3dDO04\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/pollution-soil-invertebrates-climate\/\">For soil invertebrates, pollution is a worse threat than climate<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;For soil invertebrates, pollution is a worse threat than climate&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/pollution-soil-invertebrates-climate\/embed\/#?secret=0oq1jf0cmB#?secret=Hd9f3dDO04\" data-secret=\"Hd9f3dDO04\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Fires, climate and deforestation encourage the phenomenon<\/h5>\n<p>\u2018Degradation of the soil threatens the health of <strong>at least 3.2 billion people<\/strong> (40% of the global population), whereas &gt;2 billion people live in water-stressed countries (25% of the global population),\u2019 the study explains. Alongside the degradation comes the presence of pollutants that, researchers explain, \u2018diminish its capacity to produce food, leading to crop impurities, malnutrition and disease, and they can seep into rivers, worsening water pollution\u2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A number of man-made events such as <strong>deforestation, fires and climate change<\/strong> favour the phenomenon. These phenomena, in particular, \u2018exacerbate pollution by triggering soil erosion and releasing sequestered pollutants into the air and water\u2019.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Thus, the main contaminants can spread and enter the human food chain, damaging health. Under indictment, in particular, are certain elements of various origins. \u2018Robust evidence has linked multiple pollutants, including heavy metals, pesticides, dioxins and toxic synthetic chemicals, with increased risk of cardiovascular disease,\u2019 the study continues. \u2018Some reports suggest an association between <strong>microplastic and nanoplastic<\/strong> particles and cardiovascular disease.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"W9oYYQqPmF\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-nitrogen-pollution\/\">Soil nitrogen is the one responsible for water pollution<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Soil nitrogen is the one responsible for water pollution&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-nitrogen-pollution\/embed\/#?secret=KbDhjWVbMN#?secret=W9oYYQqPmF\" data-secret=\"W9oYYQqPmF\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The result: oxidative stress and inflammation<\/h5>\n<p>But what is the <strong>mechanism<\/strong> behind this? Outlining the relationship between soil and water pollution and health, the authors provide an answer: \u2018Despite their varied chemical makeup, pollutants induce cardiovascular disease through common pathophysiological mechanisms\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In detail: \u2018Pollution by heavy metals, pesticides, and microplastics and nanoplastics causes cardiovascular damage by <strong>interacting with protein-bound thiols<\/strong>, inducing oxidative stress and inflammation, and impairing circadian rhythms.&#8217; In addition to cardiac problems, exposure to toxic substances \u2018at workplaces, through consumer products or indirectly via environmental contamination contributes to endothelial dysfunction\u2019.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"hKHUXumu8U\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/riparian-buffer-strips-water\/\">Riparian buffer strips reduce water pollution while protecting soil health, study says<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Riparian buffer strips reduce water pollution while protecting soil health, study says&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/riparian-buffer-strips-water\/embed\/#?secret=FDRFwlp2oU#?secret=hKHUXumu8U\" data-secret=\"hKHUXumu8U\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Soil pollution is a global problem<\/h5>\n<p>The intrusion of toxic substances into the soil remains a critical phenomenon worldwide. In 2022, in response to the problem, the FAO officially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/global-soil-partnership\/insop\/insop-launch-meeting\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched<\/a> the <strong>International Network on Soil Pollution<\/strong>, an alliance formed to \u2018stop soil pollution and achieve the global goal of Zero Pollution\u2019. A year earlier, the report \u2018Global Assessment of Soil Pollution\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/documents\/card\/en\/c\/cb4894en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had highlighted<\/a> how the Planet&#8217;s soils were absorbing <strong>109 million tonnes of synthetic nitrogen fertilisers<\/strong>. The report also <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-soil-pollution-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recalled<\/a> how between 2000 and 2017, <strong>pesticide<\/strong> use on a global scale had increased by 75 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Also of concern is <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/inquinamento-plastica-cause-miliardarie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plastic pollution<\/a>. According to the FAO, agricultural supply chains use <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/plastic-contamination-in-agricultural-land\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12.5 million tonnes<\/a> of products made from this material every year. Another <strong>37.3 million tonnes<\/strong> are used in food packaging. The largest users are the various segments of agricultural production and livestock farming, with a total of 10.2 million tonnes per year.
