According to two US organisations, 14% of all active ingredients in US pesticides are PFAS<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pesticides sold on the US market often contain traces of <strong>per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)<\/strong>, the compounds also known as forever chemicals, due to their <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/contamination-fluorine-soil-research-pfas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proven persistence<\/a>, which have long been under criticism because of their impact on the environment and health. This is supported by a <a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/doi\/10.1289\/ehp13954\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by two different organisations.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation, conducted by researchers at the <strong>Center for Biological Diversity in Tucson<\/strong>, Arizona, and their colleagues at <strong>Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility<\/strong>, a non-profit organisation in Silver Spring, Maryland, was published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"oe9t3Manbf\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/\">Pesticides rule in U.S. farmland as 146,000 MT of banned chemicals are in place<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Pesticides rule in U.S. farmland as 146,000 MT of banned chemicals are in place&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/embed\/#?secret=FY9pnrhHi3#?secret=oe9t3Manbf\" data-secret=\"oe9t3Manbf\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Harm to the environment and humans<\/h5>\n<p>PFAS-based pesticides are particularly effective in <strong>combating plant pests<\/strong>, mainly because of their chemical stability, which favours their prolonged action. But it is precisely their resistance that is the main problem in terms of<strong> environmental impact<\/strong>: according to experts, the half-life of some fluorinated pesticides &#8211; that is, the time it takes for their presence in the environment to be halved after spraying &#8211; can be up to <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/flourinated-pesticides-health-environment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two and a half years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Besides having a very strong impact on the <strong>environment<\/strong>, PFAS also damage the biodiversity of ecosystems and beyond. In general, perfluoroalkyl substances <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/usa-chemicals-meat-soil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are also linked<\/a> to a number of serious human health problems.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"v2wZOweHuf\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/australia-decontamination-fluorine-pfas\/\">Australian researchers tested a new method for PFAS decontamination<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Australian researchers tested a new method for PFAS decontamination&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/australia-decontamination-fluorine-pfas\/embed\/#?secret=foE0LGAvG0#?secret=v2wZOweHuf\" data-secret=\"v2wZOweHuf\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>15 thousand different substances under criticism<\/h5>\n<p>PFAS have been in the crosshairs of observers for years, but this is the first time, researchers explain, that their presence has been thoroughly investigated in the field of chemicals used in US agriculture. \u201cPesticides containing PFAS are used throughout the country on <strong>staple foods such as corn, wheat, kale, spinach, apples and strawberries<\/strong>,&#8221; says a <a href=\"https:\/\/biologicaldiversity.org\/w\/news\/press-releases\/new-study-finds-alarming-rise-in-persistent-forever-chemicals-in-pesticides-2024-07-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from the Center for Biological Diversity. \u201cThey are widely used in people\u2019s homes in flea treatments for pets and insect-killing sprays.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The researchers, the statement continues, identified the <strong>active ingredients of pesticides<\/strong> as the main source of PFAS in pesticides.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The study, in particular, identified <strong>66 compounds<\/strong> in this category, plus those used in the production of the containers, for a total of eight substances. Among these is the famous Teflon, which the EPA, the US Environmental Protection Agency, has long been calling for a ban in the pesticide industry. Worldwide, the authors point out, there are more than 15,000 synthetic chemicals that qualify as PFAS.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"pgu6VfpQxH\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/flourinated-pesticides-health-environment\/\">Flour-based pesticides hit the market as scientists are concerned<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Flour-based pesticides hit the market as scientists are concerned&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/flourinated-pesticides-health-environment\/embed\/#?secret=bD4l1c6m9t#?secret=pgu6VfpQxH\" data-secret=\"pgu6VfpQxH\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>14% of active ingredients in US pesticides are PFAS<\/h5>\n<p>The results of the study are worrying. According to the authors, <strong>14% of all active ingredients<\/strong> in US pesticides can be classified as PFAS. The list includes almost a third of the same active ingredients approved in the last 10 years. Furthermore, <strong>up to 30% of the plastic containers<\/strong> used to contain pesticides and fertilisers are made of a fluorinated compound and can release PFAS into the environment through leaching. Under indictment, finally, is the regulatory system.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<strong>U.S. oversight<\/strong> of pesticides does not adequately account for harms from persistent pesticide ingredients, like those that are PFAS,&#8221; the authors conclude.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The research findings ideally complement data from a previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/data\/statewide-survey-shallow-soil-concentrations-and-polyfluoroalkyl-substances-pfas-and-related\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> conducted by the <strong>New England Water Science Center<\/strong>\u00a0in the state of New Hampshire. On that occasion, the researchers had selected 100 different sites for specific tests.
