With potential consequences for agriculture<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At higher temperatures, the soil tends to release greater <strong>amounts of phosphorus<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adm7773\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in the journal Science Advances has found. The investigation was carried out by collecting information on a global scale. That means this phenomenon, which had already been recognised before based on the hypothesis of an existing link between <strong>climate<\/strong> and dispersion rates, is now also confirmed by empirical data.<\/p>\n<p>During their investigation, researchers from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the <strong>Chinese Academy of Sciences<\/strong> in Beijing compiled a geochemical dataset of global surface soils. In January 2023, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41561-022-01105-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by a team of researchers from Australia, Spain, Canada, the US, France and China published in the journal Nature Geoscience <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/phosphorus-co2-rice-crops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has found<\/a> that rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere lead to a <strong>reduction in phosphorus<\/strong> in rice fields. Thus threatening the security of food supplies in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Also crucial is the deterioration of soil health. In 2020, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unibas.ch\/en\/News-Events\/News\/Uni-Research\/Worldwide-loss-of-phosphorus-due-to-soil-erosion-quantified-for-the-first-time0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> by the <strong>University of Basel<\/strong> revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sos-phosphorus-agriculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 50 per cent of the global phosphorus loss<\/a> of the element in agriculture is attributable to <strong>soil degradation<\/strong>. Erosion, in particular, <strong>leaches the element<\/strong> from farmland to wetlands, streams and bodies of water.
